but Danica has to stop this crap. Who does she think she is? Seriously...
She's an above average racer at best who owes most of her publicity to the lack of penis. She needs a bit of an ego adjustment i think.
(She's also from around my neck of the woods, FWIW)

I hope she makes it to NASCAR, so I can see her and Tony Stewart get in a fight. :roflmao2:

It is too bad for IRL, when your most marketed driver only makes the news for the stuff that happens outside of race car. But that is the state of the IRL.
Well maybe not all that bad (http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.sjcars.com/files/danica2.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.sjcars.com/danica.html&h=500&w=400&sz=229&hl=en&start=1&tbnid=r2XR_TuinyjbEM:&tbnh=130&tbnw=104&prev=/images%3Fq%3Ddanica%2Bpatrick%26gbv%3D2%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DG)

That is why IRL is in a sad state.
IRL is in a sad state because of the nature of open wheel cars. If they touch, they are done, in most cases. It is hard to cheer for someone if one incident leaves them out of a race. People watch races to see crashes in most instances, sad but true.
Modern technology has driven the price of racing so high and made building a car so complicated that the common man cannot afford to race on a large scale anymore. The budgets are getting so high that only the uber rich ( or uber sponsored) can afford to race and be competitive. Hence the domination of most racing series by two or three teams, regardless of the format.

Yeah, but they do a bad job of marketing their sport. Compare NASCAR to IRL, night and day. At the IRL race they have a Danica hauler and a TMS hauler, when Cup is in town the place is packed.
I for one like open wheel racing, the fact they can't touch doesn't bother me it is just a different type of racing.
Nascar of today and Nascar of 20 years ago are very different beasts. If a press member tried to poke fun at the redneck image and moonshiner roots of Nascar at the track a few years back, credentials would be revoked and said press member would be shown the door. Ask some of the guys at SportsRadio 1310 The Ticket about this.
Nascar today has learned to roll with the punches, with the likes of Ricky Bobby and the Coke Zero commercials as proof of this.
The IRL and Cart just do not have as marketable of a product. In person, open wheel cars a blast to watch, on TV, not so much. Not as many races, fragile cars, limited TV appeal. etc, make open wheel racing hard to market. You seldom if ever see Indy Lights, Toyota Atlantic, F2000, Mazdastar etc getting any TV coverage.
Nascar on the other hand has primetime major network coverage of three series. Why? Because they can beat and bang and spin and smoke and hit the wall and come back for more. A pissed of driver can spin out someone he feels wronged him.
In open wheel, you get to go yell at each other and throw towels when you get mad. Not quite the same. Never has been, never will be, and that is why Nascar will thrive and open wheel racing will always appeal to a limited niche market.

Bingo! and at least with NASCAR the fans can relate to the drivers and cars...at least they can support their Marques. (at least one can drive a car that resembles what Jr. drives) In fact if one has a Grand in your pocket, and an old Monte Carlo or Cutlass in your yard, you too can go play kinda like the "Big Boys" (Factory Stock Class at yer Local Dirt Track) There is no open wheel class either Dirt or Pavement that you can do this in!

Don't forget Super-Tex AJ Foyt could throw a punch if needed. TMS 1997
Oh yeah, people still listen to the 1310 Ticket. :)
SCCA has several open wheel classes, such as F2000, Formula V, Formula Ford that the common man can run in, albeit not as easily as the local dirt track scene, but it can be done.

All humor aside ( I'm jus pokin fun at Open Wheel) the thing that Nascar has over any open wheel class is the fact that the NASCAR Fans have a much more "Hands On Experience" when they go to a Race.....They actually have the chance to Talk to Jr.,Richard Petty,Tony Stewart,Boris Said or a buttload of other drivers...".up an coming" to "Racin Legends" (Jr. Johnson is a blast to chat with!) they can ride in "Stock Cars" for a lap (Small Fee,lol) they can see a full blown Sprint Cup Car on a rotisserie (Cut Away body panels) to see jus what goes into building one of these critters. and on and on. IRL and CART keep their fans at arms length .
When I went to the IRL race at Texas, we bought pit passes, either bought them, or they were given to us, cannot recall. Walked under the track, wandered the pits, saw cars and drivers up close, stood with a few yards of the truck watching the awards ceremony, etc. Could not imagine a much more personal racing experience. To be fair, I have never been to a Nascar event, just too big of a crowd for me to want to fight. Been to several IRL races due to the smaller size. Well, that and the fact that I used to work for Greg Ray and even did a little bit of work on his car in his garage back in his SCCA days.

At Talladega This year ALL this stuff is in the parking lot or on a Souvenir Midway just off the parking lot,no pit pass necessary.Nascar makes EVERYTHING Except the Pits and Garages (With the exception of Daytona) Very accesable to the pubilc...I walked around all day,Talked to Jr.Johnson (who was just wandering around the Midway causally chattin with folk) got my face on the Speed Channel, enjoyed the Live Music....All for the price of a Hot Dog and a Gatorade!
Did anyone in here say it was?
That is cool Figment!!! At Texas, they had quite a few haulers selling goods for different drivers, etc. at the IRL events. Alot of food vendors, etc. and I think there may have been some music as well.
A bit of a midway feel to it, and it was all outside the track, so you could enjoy it free of charge I guess. Our track is in the middle of nowhere and the traffic makes it not too conducive to just "stop by" for a look around.

Oh Yea?? Put on a Snowmobile Suit,Get in your car, roll up ALL the windows, turn the Heat ALL the way up on a 100+ degree day and get out on the Hollywood Freeway at about 3:00 pm....Then you might get close to what it is like driving a Sprint Cup car at Bristol,Daytona or Charlotte in July! No, it's not a sport. Once you throw in the old internal combustion engine it ceases to become a sport and becomes entertainment.

Using this logic, if you were to climb into an oven you'd be participating in a sport as well.

Ok, after pondering this during my lunchtime nap I have come up the reason IRL is suffering.
I think IRL is trying to model themselves after stock racing by running on the oval tracks. Oval tracks don't really showcase the drivers talents like road courses do. Since open wheel racing lacks the elements that make stock cars racing exciting, they need to stick to courses that bring out the elements that make open wheel racing fun to watch.

Open wheel on road courses bring up the issues of passing. Watch an F1 race lately? Most of the passing is done on the start? After that, it turns into pit strategy. Open wheel needs to develop a car that can run in traffic well, get some tracks designed to make passing a reality, and think about putting the push to pass button back under the drivers thumb.

I have not seen a lot of F1, but from what I understand is that real racing and passing is done in the corners. I have started to enjoy races at Sonoma and Watkins Glen more each year since out braking someone can beat horse power. Does this not carry over to F1 and other open wheel road races?
Yes, passing under green in F1 is usually done under braking in the corners. This however leads to some rough racing and sets drivers up for disaster. They don't check their mirrors as you shoot in under them inside and it gets ugly quick. The top cars for Ferrari, McLaren have such a horsepower advantage over the bottom end cars that they can pass at will, leaving the has beens to run in the back, crowding each other in the corners trying to get into the top 8, as only the top 8 places are points positions in F1.

Much of my open wheel knowledge comes from my friend that went through the Skip Barber Racing school, racing the open wheel cars. The cars as they where racing where probably on a more level racing field with regards to HP. He told me much of the school focused on lines and braking into the corners. I guess it is sill about HP in reality though.
Funny Story. When Greg Ray was runnning Toyota Atlantic, I went along to a race where he had rented his car to a new driver, who rented the car and flew in a driving school instructor from the school he had attended. At some point, he was asking Greg about something the instructor had told him. Greg's reply was that racing instructors were simply guys that were not good enough to race or somesuch. Unbeknownst to him, the instructor was standing behind them. DOH!!!!!!!
That same weekend, the mechanics and I were talking about how hot the guy's girlfriend was, in rather coarse fashion. We turn around to see the kid's father standing right behind us.
It was sort of a stick your foot in your mouth kind of weekend.

I personally prefer if they don't touch fenders. Spending half the time under a caution flag isn't racing, it's driving in circles. It would also be more fun if they did something other than turning left. Cowlings with a primary purpose of approximating the lines of a passenger car don't impress me much either.
If sedans crashing into each other is what I were interested in, the local demolition derby is only $5 to see live, and the odds are pretty good that I went to high school with one of the drivers.
