Hi,
I'm from ABQ, but have lived in the PNW for the last 7 years, and this is where I started cycling. Now I'm thinking that I'd love to go back home for some rides. What kind of road bike events are there? Where should I look them up? Are they around ABQ, or elsewhere in the state (all options are fine with me.) And I just was reading about the goathead problem-something with which I've not had to contend out here-what will I need to do differently riding in my beloved desert?

Both of these have pretty comprehensive calendars, as well as links to weekly/regular group rides. There are a ton of regular rides in and around Albuquerque, most of which are put on by local clubs/teams. I've been going to the Saturday Rio Cycling Club ride that leaves at 8:00 a.m. from the Cycle Cave on Menaul. It's a medium-distance ride, and we average about 18 mph with nobody getting dropped.

Goatheads here are like nowhere else......I run thorn-resistant tires and also add a layer of insurance with Spinskins tire liners. I'd use at least two flat-protection devices per tire, whether it be tire liners, thick tubes, thorn-resistant tires, or Slime/etc. inside of the tube. Also, the regular "tire swipe" with a gloved hand is a must to knock the thorns off. Stick to the center of bike paths, and off of the extreme edge of shoulders, and you should be fine. Just be sure to bring along at least one spare tube and a patch kit, too.

Haven't been on any organized rides other than w/ my workmates.....but there is a great book of rides in New Mexico available at LBS and book stores. Also city maps w/ bike lanes marked. Fantastic riding out here.
Goat heads are just one of the road hazards around here. I put in Mr. Tuffy's (orange) and have had great luck since.
