Some dude on an old-school middleweight cruiser heading uphill....fast!

When I saw him, my reaction was something like this:

Think 1950s-style Scwhinn with one gear (maybe a two-speed kickback hub, but does it really matter?). I was descending and he was about ¾ of the way up on the steeper part of the climb. No helmet. Cotton t-shirt. Huge grin. And to think a few minutes earlier I was huffing and puffing in my 34-25 and my bike probably weighs 20-30 pounds less than his!

Maybe DiabloScott can shed some light on this mysterious masochist…??

Not this particular guy... but there are definitely some oddballs up there from time to time. My favorite is the guy who rides an old steel tandem solo.

There was another old guy who regularly hauled up a BOB trailer loaded with an ice chest and cold drinks for everyone he met.

And Grant Peterson rides up frequently with people who try to out retro-grouch him... haven't seen anything like a 1950's Schwinn though - was it a newsboy special with fake gas tank and everything?

It wasn't a Pee Wee Herman-style heavyweight, but it definitely looked heavy and old!

I've seen a guy like that a couple of times - wearing cutoff jeans and a t-shirt. Once I saw him smoking a cigarette at the junction (his saddle was pointed up at a painful angle). I never saw him any higher than the junction, though - he comes up from Northgate.
