The guy needs to move to Texas. Here, we'd say good riddance.

I will tell him that he is very welcome in Texas, but not until he is finished with his "Love A Bicyclist "crusade!

I live in Michigan but, strangely, I've never considered cycling in Detroit. Come to think of it, I try not to drive in Detroit.
I suppose I'd ride thru Flint during the business day, so maybe I shouldn't write off Detroit so quickly...

The last business I visited in Detroit was surrounded by razor wire, had an armed guard at the gate, and had a guard tower overlooking the premises. That city needs about a hundred thousand more cyclist just like the one in the story.

From the small amount of information given in the article, it sounds like a justified shoot.
Multiple attackers (disparity of force) + physical violence with apparent intent to seriously hurt or kill = legal to utilize deadly force to stop the assault. (At least by Texas law, which is excellent with regards to self defense. I have never been to Michigan, so I am not up on its carry or self defense laws.)
I certainly hope he had a CHL/CWP/CPL, but if he didn't, then I hope he remembers being alive charged with a weapons violation beats being dead any day of the week.
I am glad that the victim is OK, and I am glad that the news actually ran a story where a firearm was used in self defense. It is still a crappy situation that shouldn't have occurred, but the cyclist didn't make it happen. The gangbangers did.
Be safe on the roads, and remember that it CAN happen to you.

Sounds justified. The only issue I'd see is if he didn't have a CCW.

As the gun obsessed say, "Better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6."
