New York State RR championships. Pretty anemic 35+ field with only 13 guys. 54 miles, 5 laps of a ten mile loop. One major climb (~800 feet over ~1.5 miles) and one small hill before the line. First time up the big hill the pace was enough to shell all but 6 of us. The second time up the hill lost another and were down to five. By the last lap we were still at five at the base of the climb. I was feeling good the whole day and paid close attention to my rivals to the point where I knew there was only one other guy whole looked faily comfortable (and who had a strong history of doing well locally and at masters nationals).
On the last lap at the base of the climb (~6 miles from the finish) I attacked the group and put in a hard effort to the top where I had almost a minute. From the top of the hill it was essentially rollers, two turns and a small hill to the finish. I got into TT mode and just churned away ... felt really good. At the first turn I ran into a slight hiccup. On previous laps we'd been taking the exit wide across the yellow line. The marshals were stopping oncoming traffic to allow us to do this and it was great considering it was a fast corner. Well, I shouldn't have taken it for granted again because just as I entered the turn I noticed a car sitting right at the exit in the opposite lane and I was carrying too much speed!! I did everything I could to scrub speed short of putting my feet on the ground, but in the end had to lay the bike down. I wound up sliding to a stop 2 feet from the bumper ... whew! I got up quickly assessed the damage threw the chain back on and got back on track. Of course that whole process probably only took ~20 seconds, but felt like 10 mins. Pumped with adrenalin, I rode strongly to the finish and won by ~15 seconds or so.
Now for the damage;
Rash to the arm and hip = no big deal
Broken thumb which will require two pins on Wed = suckage
Winning the state champs in my age group = priceless

Clara Sanchez (in red white and blue french colors) won this heat by sliding across the line first: Match Sprint (http://www.cyclingnews.com/photos.php?id=/photos/2006/worldcup0607/losangeles07/losangeles072/IMG_0417)
That is awesome. Be sure to frame your thumb x-ray along with your championship jersey.

Thanks for the positive comments guys.
The winners got a sweet Timex solar watch too. I had every intention of ebaying the thing, but think I'll start wearing it just so that I'm reminded of the day every time I look at it.

I know nothing about racing. How long does it take to go 54miles in a race?
Hardcore. Great job.
Keep the watch forever.

It all depends on the type of course (hilly or flat), the weather, who shows up, the mood of the pack ....
Hi geneman,
Great job! :) +1 on keeping the watch.
Many moons ago, NY had three state championships -- south, north, and west. Is that still the case?

I nominate geneman for the 2008 BF HTFU Trophy.
What an appropriate user name. I should change mine to nogeneman.

Thanks Cleve. They only have the one race this year and have limited it to one race for the past several years. Obviously placing it at the farthest point West in the state that you can go without crossing into PA, coupled with $4/gallon gas made it very fairly difficult for the rest of the state to participate. Dissappointing, but next year when it's in NYC or somewhere downstate, I won't make the trip.

Is that near Kissing Bridge? I grew up in Elma, just outside of East Aurora, the map looks kinda familiar.
Anyway, congrats again, and keep the watch!

Nice job Mark! The Rochester guys had good representation in the 4/5 race also. I raced pretty stupidly, I couldn't figure out if I was trying to conserve myself for Empire State Games this week, or if really wanted to go for a good place in this race. I ended up in 6th after my left quad cramped on the finishing climb. In the interest of not destroying myself further, I just rolled across the line.
I need to work on my nutrition!

Don't take this the wrong way g-man, but please stay Upstate. We do have enough fast guys down here closer to NY City already thank you very much.

Hi Mark ... 6th is pretty darn respectable in that field. Hopefully you left some juice in the legs for later this week. Best of luck at games! It's 4 days of hell so conservation is key. Do Western NY proud and honor our gold medal tradition!
