Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Guess that rim weight! (Weinnman Deep V's)

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. We weighed out some Weinnman DP-18's on the hanger scale today at the LBS. Anyone want to take a stab at how much they weigh powdercoated, and how much as bare silver?

Hint: Velocity Deep V's weigh around the 540g area.

Answer: painted colors - 710g (hmm, heaviest clincher EVER?)
Bare silver - 640g.
Mavic Open Pro - 420g.

What was your elevation at the time of weighing the rim?

Yeah... if you want to build a wheel as heavy as an Arrospok (tm) without the Arrospok look (tm)!

damn! i am pretty surprised, didnt think they'd big of a difference

i looked this up the other day and according to bicycle.com, the wheelset comes in at 2457 grams....~5.4 el bees

still lighter and stiffer than an A-spoke set. I hate to say it, but I'm glad I sold them now that I have "real" wheels

I tried to look for this info on the interweb and couldn't find out. I could feel the weight but wanted a numerical value to compare to others. F'n crazy.

My stem is **** ton heavy as well. The whole front end of my bike weighs more than the frame and back end.

They're heavy? NO! Then how come every rider on the TDF is sporting those wheels???

Ok enough sarcasm, yes they're heavy but they're not wheels for racing but rather marketed to a new type of cycling that the majority of people who take part in will buy parts for aesthetics rather than function.

still probably worth it to save up a few extra more bucks to get regular old velocity deep v's.

anyone know how much Mavic CXP 22's weigh? use the same shop scale even?

Or not.

I don't know where you get the idea that they are comparably priced, as you imply that they are here and outright said so in the last thread about the Weinys. Complete Deep V sets with Formulas retail for $275, whereas DP-18s with Formulas average out at $150. To me, an extra $125 is not worth the whopping ~200g in weight savings.

Holy shamokes.... that's a 10 oz difference between the DP-18's and the Mavics!!!
If I get the Mavics, I'll shave fractions of seconds off of my time every year! SOLD!!!

Or maybe ill just drink half my bottle of water before I ride.

You make 200g to not sound like a lot in weight savings.

You'd be right if we were talking about weight anywhere else.

Rotational weight is more important than any other weight though, and 200g makes a fairly good difference.

What my true position is: buy some lower profile rims, even box. CXP22, Fusion, Aerohead, Open Sport... all much better than Deep V's unless you're really pushing the whole 'hefty hombre' thing.

Again, you're ignorant of the fact that rotational mass counts for a lot more than weight anywhere else on the bike, and are basically showing anyone with more than a rudimentary understanding of bikes that you don't know much.

But I digress. If dudes want to put having the aesthetic of a gaudy looking painted rim over anything else (such as rotational mass), I guess let them. But 710g for a rim that's not even aero is a pretty bad choice for anything other than looks alone.

So what you are saying is one **** rim is better than another **** rim...

Nah, they both suck. IRD Cadence Aero/Niobium30 for the win!!!!!

Not even 10oz. 200g = 7.05479239oz according to Google. (I'm using bare silver DP-18s for reference.)

I guess I didn't consider the fact that rotational weight is more important. Still, for 95% of cyclists out there, the 200g over Deep Vs doesn't take much from performance.

I've been shopping around for a while to replace my front DP-18 (that I picked up for 50). Missed an opportunity for one of those IRO hubs for $18 and am still trying to track down an Open Pro rim on the cheap.

Surly w/ Open Pro for $127 here http://aebike.com/page.cfm?action=details&PageID=30&SKU=WE9108

Still might just pick up the CXP22 wheelset and call it a day...

Ahh, I got a little out of hand earlier. Sometimes I forgot that not everyone rides their bike like me so my advice is a little off hand, like why people should worry about how much their rims weigh.
