Here's their explanation of why some items don't get a 10% dividend upon purchase:

Hello,

Thank you for your e-mail regarding your membership number.

The reason that item was marked as being non-dividendable is because
it was a sale item. Sale items do not earn a dividend because they
are discounted more at the time of purchase than the dividend would
have been. Any items with a price ending in $._9 or $._3 would not be
eligible for the dividend because they are already discounted more
than 15%.

Here is some more information on member benefits:

Please let me know if you need a new membership card or any
additional cards for family members. If you made any purchases this
year without your membership number, I'd be happy to credit your
account for them.

We look forward to serving your outdoor needs.

Question I just bought this item yesterday, and when I got home I
noticed on my receipt that it had a asterisk next to it indicating
that it is a "non-dividendable" item.

Ultimate Pro Elite Bike Repair Stand $245

Why is that so, and how can I tell if other items have that
designation before buying them?

Are you somehow questioning REI ? REI is our partner and friend!! We are willing and happy members and REI cares more us than anything.

Sorry for the sarcasm, lots of people somehow are empowered by REI "membership." REI does some shady business promotion (i've posted a few times Re: REI). Now I guess 'membership and dividends' are ok if beneficial to REI. OF COURSE ! Their business model ain't giving anything away, their businesss model was fine for people that like to look at their stuff and spontaneously purchase. Not today; Free shipping to their store is costing us much more than just getting it delivered. But! Now we're willing to go online and compare ( REI seldom is cheap) and get it from anywhere. REI is losing their questionable loyalty and getting to be just like everyone else. Everyone else who are also big boxes and crushed the little mom and pop outfitters.

There's nothing wrong with this, nor REI's business plan, but REi is not anymore than any other retail business.

Hello,

Thank you for your e-mail regarding your membership.

Yes, that is why that purchase doesn't contribute towards your dividend.
Using the 15% coupon discounted it more than the dividend would have
been by purchasing it at regular price and receiving a dividend.

We look forward to serving your outdoor needs.

The item cost $245.00. Was it b/c I used a 15% discount coupon I
rec'd in an email that it didn't deserve a dividend?
