Mountain Biking - 1" threaded to 1 1/8" threadless?

Old trek frame from when I was younger. I was thinking of rebuilding it a bit so my girlfriend could ride it. The fork on it is a real POS though. Problem is that it has a 1" threaded headset. If I pull the fork off, and knock the headset cups out will the head toob be able to fit a 1 1/8" headset? my guess is no, but I figured I would ask.

My guess is "no" too. I do see 1" threaded forks for sale at nashbar. Can't speak of the brand quality. But by the time you get a fork you may be half way to the price of a new bike.

I have the same decision to make as i let my friend's beat on my old bike (which became my wifes bike) and now its shot.

Marzzochi and Pace do 1" threaded forks. They start at around £130 in the U.K.

You can't turn a 1 inch into a 1 1/8th. If its a steel frame and you feel crazy, you might be able to weld a new headtube on it. I'd just go with a cheap new frame, you'll end up spending the same amount if you go looking for a decent 1 inch fork.

a one inch threadless would give you more new fork options.
If the frame will be ridden for a few years this may be a way to go, in that you still will be able to get threadless 1's in a few years.

there's an adapter for it. i got one on my older giant.

I would look on "the Bay" for a rigid.

You can't upsize a headtube...You can downsize, but never upsize. Its simply impossible without putting a new headtube on.

You can go to 1 inch threadless though...I would just buy a new frame.

yea I dont want to get a 1" fork for it, and I dont want to do anything crazy like welding on a new head toob. I would much rather buy a cheap frame. I just didnt know if perhaps the head toobs were all the same size and it was the headset that made the difference. But aperently thats not the case.

i meant i got an adapter for the stem. sorry for the confusion, as i wasn't thinking about the head tube. i know that it's hard to find a 1" fork these days but i have two frames with 1" headtubes but on one i was able to run a 1 1/8 stem with the adapter. good luck.
