I'm annoyed by people who are annoyed by Chicago accents! And the vent comes from someone who lives on the east coast! Hey, I'm from the Chicago area (but I speak with a southern Illinois accent). Very few Chicagoans speak even remotely close to what the Superfans portray.
Accents don't annoy me or indicate a intelligence level. Word choice and choice of subject matter influence my judgement of an individual's intelligence more than anything. A good example of that for me is the comedian who resorts too much to profanity.
I'm also annoyed by people without young children who feel like they need to criticize parents with young children. Anyone who has to go to the grocery store with a child understands what a challenge that can be. If pushing the cart keeps the child occupied, it's a good thing. I agree that the child should be watched closely but that's also part of the challenge. The best option is to avoid the grocery store if at all possible if you have a child (and most parents with young children do if they can). Don't criticize the parent -- feel sorry for them. They are suffering, too!
My true rant is people who intentionally jump when taking their pull. Believe it or not from what I have just written, I am usually not a cranky person. When someone jumps, I get cranky!
Enough!

Man, Tree Trunk! It's good to see you. I'm only sorry I haven't read more of your posts, lately.
(When I moved up to Kalamazoo, Michigan as a teenager, from Wash. DC, the kids made fun of my "accent." I couldn't understand why this was, since all of them spoke funny. :D )
Hey, I speak American!
:D
Seriously, I think it more funny than anything when people think every person in Chicago talks like they used to do in the Saturday Night Live skits ("Cheezebouger! Cheezebouger!" and "Da Beears!").
I think a little local color is nice- it's no different than in other countries. I'm sure French Canadians speak with a different accent than the French in France. Swiss people in Germany have a different accent than the Germans in Germany. It's all good. Kinda funny, though, when you think that there are so many regional dialects out there. But it's what makes us unique and different, and I like it. I don't think I have an accent, but you never know. I think east coast folks have a REALLY distinct accent, and so do southerners. And I have heard some Chicagoans speaking with that accent too- sounds cute to me, in my opinion.
Now as far as kids go, that's a whole nuther story....

Thank goodness...if accents indicated intelligence levels, my hillbilly accent would make me a moron.
I've actually heard Midwesterners sort of talk like "The bearsss" but not all of them. Or they'll say "sassich" instead of "sausage". However, not everyone from chicago talks the same- it's too big of a city! Like NYC- does everyone talk the same there?

Tree Trunk, we Southern Illinoisans don't speak with an accent . . . . . the rest of the country does! :D

LOL and thanks to all who replied to my accidental post (and thanks for the welcome back, Lilbigman). I was actually replying to the "Vent" thread. I am just getting back into this forum (and a good one it is).
I never thought people from So. Illinois had an accent until I moved to the Chicago area. Boy, did it get me good tips here when I was a waiter. Now, when I go back to the Springfield (Illinois) area or when my family comes for a busy, they sound a bit strange to me. For a few days after a visit I sound like a So. Illinois boy again. It's very relaxing to me.

Did I say "busy"? Duh. I meant to say "visit". I hope I didn't prove a point!

Koffee,
You don't have an accent. I can't tell where you're
from by reading your posts (other than the mention
of yojimbo's. :lol:

Hey Koffee and all other Chicago area forum people -- listen to Oldies 104.3 on Tuesday (1/26/04). I am a finalist in the "Why I Deserve To Go See David Letterman" contest and I am reading my top ten list on the air. If I win, my wife and I get to go to NYC to see a taping of the David Letterman show. Pretty cool, eh? I suppose I'll get to try out my So. Illinois / Chicago accent on the New Yorkers.

I was astounded the other day when a caller asked if I was really from Wisconsin. I asked why. He said I didn't have a Wisconsin accent, he said I spoke with no accent. Hmmm. He said he was from Illinois. I asked him what I was supposed to sound like. Makes me wonder- does that mean that I sound like I'm from Illinois?
Wisconsin accent: beg =beg or bag
agg=egg
doughnit=doughnut
bubbler=drinking fountain
Fib= Friendly Illinois Buddy or fing illinois *******, the latter being the common use of the term.
They just did a news story on the Billy Goat restaurant. The guy said that people still remember the "Cheezebougah, cheezebougah" skit. I almost went there for lunch after I watched the story. :D
What I can't stand, though, is when people say "Illinois"
with an emphasis on the "s". The "s" in Illinois is silent! Sheesh!

Yah, hey dere megaman, you must not be from Wisconsin, dontcha know!
I have reservations this June for my family to camp next to the Elroy-Sparta trail. The whole family is pumped about the trip. I can't wait to see my kids when they encounter the tunnels!
Does that trail go to Lacrosse and into Trempolo (sp) & Perot St. Park?

I live about 20 minutes from the trail. One of the best trails in the state.
If I was from Westby I'd probably talk like that. :D

Actually, the Great River trail does that, but that trail connects directly with the La Crosse State trail which connects with the Elroy Sparta trail. If you want you can ride about 100 miles on rail trails while only leaving the trail for a bit in Elroy.

I love accents. All kinds, from anywhere, it's part of what makes people unique and interesting.
I have never understoud why some people have a problem with them or, conversely, why some folks are so sensitive about thier own accent.
Speak the speak. It's beautiful.
