What are some of the saddest, most depressing songs you know? Songs of loss, pain, suffering, etc.- Songs that make you want to slice your arm off...
A few gems I can think of:
The Cure - To wish impossible things
Low - Things we lost in the fire
Dirty Three - I really should have gone out last night

and its a really cheesy choice but "wish you nights" by Cliff Richard brings a lump to my throat, as does "wondeful world" by Louis Armstrong, the theme from *M*A*S*H* and "mia bambina caro" by Puccini

I won't say it's devastating, but "Moonshiner" by Uncle Tupelo is pretty sad.

Samuel Barber's Adaggio For Strings.

There's a jazz song, the title I don't know. But it's essentially, "if I had done this or that, maybe you would have loved me as much as I loved you." If I hadn't laughed at all your jokes, if I hadn't let you light my cigarette...
Something like that. It's really poignant, because it's someone who realizes he just doesn't love her as much as she loved him...I just wish I knew the title of that song!
