Sorry for the newb question but you gotta start somewhere. About to register for my first race. I'm 41 y/o. I would want to enter the senior cat 5 and not Masters Men 35+, yes?

Yes. M35+ will likely have some Cat 2s and/or Cat 1s in the field.

Race 5s.

In many Master's races, Cat 5 may not be allowed to participate.

If all else fails, read the event flyer.

Even if the organizers would let you race Masters 45, trust me you do not want to. In most places Masters 35, and Masters 45 are faster than Cat 4 and Cat 5 races.

If you can find it, 35+ Cat 5 race would be a nice way to start. (i.e. a Cat 5 race only open to riders over 35)

^^ Yup. I'm getting clobbered in the 35+ 3/4/5.

The difference between senior and masters was confusing me because of my age. Not sure what qualifies as a senior. I can enter either senior cat 4/5 or masters 35+ in this race. The former is fewer laps so I guess that's the one for me.

Around here, the M35+ races are usually faster than the Cat 3 races too. Shorter though.

The best of both worlds. The 35+ guys usually have jobs/families that keep them from taking too many risks in the pursuit of a medal or socks.

Senior in this context refers to not a junior (i.e. over 17, although Juniors can enter it too). Masters refers to older riders, in this case Masters 35, you have to be 35 or over. However as pointed out the Masters 35 can, and often does, have Pro 1,2, riders.

Rule book, available at USACycling.org helps sort this stuff out for you.

Truth. I did a local early season race which I thought was 35+ 4/5. As I was lining up I realized it was 35+ all categories. It was brutally fast. But also very safe: the high pace kept the field strung out and all the squirrells got shuffled to the back.

True. I have been excelling in this category, which I refer to as "slow old dudes."
