Hi there. I have a 45 mile daily commute. Bikes on trains rock! Due to the sorry state of bus service in So. California, public transit would not be an option for me if it weren't for bikes.

Hi CC, is that 45 miles one way or round trip? How much of it is on the bike?
Welcome to BF, and feel free to PM me with any questions :) !

45 mile one way by car. The rail trip is farther. The bike part is only a flat two miles, but once a week I get off the homeward bound train one stop early. This adds about five miles with easy hills to get to the station where my car is. Riding from home to the station is five, moderatly hilly, miles. That would be a bit much at 5:00 a.m.

That sounds like a nice way to do a commute, especially since you get to relax a bit on the way in!
