Bicycle Mechanics - Crank removal/tightening on Shimano Sora 2 piece Crankset

I´ve got a 2008 Specialized Allez double with a 2 piece Shimano Sora cranks that needs tightening.
However I can´t really figure out what type of cranks they are and what tool I need.
I looked at Park Tool and I honestly can´t figure out what type it is.
Isis, Hollowtech, square spindle:twitchy:.

If you have a Sora 2-piece crank, it's got a Hollowtech II spindle. Does it look like the one shown below? If it does, then congratulations, that's a major improvement over those Sugino square-taper ones :)

If so, then removal is pretty easy:

1) loosen the pinch bolts on the left arm using a 5mm hex key

2) remove the plastic retaining cap from the left end of the spindle using Park Tool BBT-9 (http://aebike.com/page.cfm?PageID=30&action=details&sku=TL7246)

3) look in the gap that the pinch bolts squeeze, and you see a thin plastic thing. Pop the outboard end of it up away from the spindle; this plastic thing is a "safety" that plugs into a hole in the crankarm, so that it doesn't fall off even if the retaining cap falls out.

4) remove the left crankarm from the spindle. Rock it while pulling, and it'll begin to come off. Tapping on the end of the spindle to drive it out of the arm also works.

5) pull the driveside arm out of the bike from the other side.

6) if you want the bottom-bracket cups removed too, the BBT-9 tool will also do that. The driveside cup is lefty-tighty, rightie-loosie on your Specialized, since it's English-thread.


Reinstallation is similar. Grease the spindle lightly with some good-quality grease, including the splines at the end. Don't forget to pop the thin plastic retainer back down (the one mentioned in step 3). Before tightening the left arm's pinch bolts, use the plastic retaining cap to slightly preload the bearings (modest turning force on the BBT-9 with your fingers will be enough). If possible, use a torque wrench to tighten the pinch bolts on the left arm to 12-15 N-m in a progressive 1-2, 1-2, 1-2 pattern.

I thought it looked like Hollowtech, but I think the site said that would have been Ultegra.

I found a manual for the two piece on the Shimano website.

Is that just marketing since its their own tools? Would I be just as well off with the Park Tool?
I Figure the TL-FC16 looks necessary but the FC32 looks similar to the park tool.

So I thought I´d pick it apart and check the bearings.
I´m kinda unsure what lube to use on the bearings though.

That's correct. In fact, the Park Tool model is better, because it's longer, so you won't have to use as much force when removing/installing bearing cups.

If it's the pedal itself (not the crank), then any bearing grease should be OK. If the pedal grinds, maybe some of the ball bearings shattered. Be aware that reassembling the pedal bearings might be tricky... but then again, it sounds like you have nothing to lose by trying, either :)

I was thinking about getting a torque wrench for tightening the cranks.
Would the TW-2 be a good choice for this?
It says it tightens between 0-67.8Nm (0-600 lb-in)

A follow up question.
I got a hold of a Park Tool tw-2 wrench but can´t figure out how to use it with the bolts that needs tightening when installing or tightening the Sora Cranks.
I have a feeling I need to get some more "accessories" to be able to tighten the left arm pinch bolt with a beam torque wrench like Park Tools?
Problem is I have no idea what and I read the manual again and again without getting any wiser.
So, an idiot question perhaps but how do I use the torque wrench to tighten the left arm pinch bolt?:o
