you just had to say the word beer in front of me.... count me as a possible.

suggested long route, Irvine Train Station to Solano Beach.

What time did you want to leave San Juan or San Clemente?
Any dates in your mind yet?

Dates: It's either gotta be this Sunday or July 12,13,19,20,26,27. Votes?

Anyone who wanted to start a longer route could come down from Irvine to SJC train station via Camino Capistrano and meet up with anyone riding from there then grab anyone else riding out of San Clem at the North Beach train station. That would give you an extra 20 miles. I have no idea when to start, but it usually takes me 2 hours to ride from Irvine to San Clem (30miles).
Let's say we take the medium route from there, so lunch in Solana Beach.

Someone help me out with a time break-down for this. Remember the pace should be relaxed and welcoming for us newbies. What time should we leave South County to get to Solana between 11:30 and 1:30 ish??

Yum... Sharkbite Red.
No, you are thinking of Shark Attack, the double hopped red ale...

I'd say to plan it in July... and maybe we can talk to Amtrak ahead of the event to make sure they have a railcar for all our bikes this time!

San Juan Capistrano would work best because I have only seen Amtrak running when I have done this ride, not the Metro. Amtrak does not stop in San Clemente...

think about ~15MPH pace as that is fairly newbie friendly, and that means about 1 hour from Irvine to San Juan Capistrano (13 miles), 3 hours to Carlsbad (37 miles), 1 1/2 hours to regroup and eat lunch, then an additional hour to Solano Beach (13 miles).

Total time: ~6.5 hours
Total mileage: 63 (Irvine to Solana Beach)
Total Beer Consumption at 2 seperate Pizza Ports and the Amtrak home: ~5 pints

It's about 35 miles from SONGS to Pizza Port so if you have a 15 MPH pace, it would be 2 hours and 20 minutes from there. Add 20 minutes or so if you start at the beginning of the beach bike path at, I think, Christianitos.

You have to factor in the ratio of beer / avg mph in to the total time.

I don't know about you but for me as my beer consumption increases my speed decreases.
:)

I might be interested in this. It's in my neck of the woods. I took a 6 month break from riding and have just started back at it so I am completely out of shape so this ride would be just about my speed.

No, the Sharkbite Red hails from San Clemente Port. I'm an IPA man myself. San Clem just introduced the Killer Dana Double IPA which is even better than the Doheny Double.

Amtrak stops once or twice in the evening at the San Clem Pier on weekends, but I agree that SJC is the best gathering place for Southlanders.

This is a great idea, So:

Long riders can start at the Irvine train station (where Amtrak is guaranteed to stop later)(63mi total)
Short riders can pick it up in San Juan Capistrano train station or San Clemente train station (50mi./43mi. total)

Lunch in Carlsbad, and final beers in Solana Beach before Amtrak home. Now for a date....To be continued.

Date: Let's go democratic...PM me with a preferred weekend (and day) in July, except for the first one right after the 4th. I'll leave voting open throughout the week. and post updates on the most likely. That way, if you can flex a little you can change your vote; making a certain date even more likely. Once it looks pretty certain we'll just call the day, set it in stone, and I'll ride it alone if no one can make it :)

Don't worry about the pace. No one is getting dropped. I'll probably be at the back makin' sure ;)

Important update: The leading dates so far are July 12th and 26th. Seems like everyone has a preference for Saturdays. If you want to re-cast your vote we can narrow it down to one of those days.

The 19th and 20th are officially off the list. I forgot the San Clemente Ocean Festival (www.oceanfestival.org/schedule.html) is going on then, and I'm considering doing a Triathlon (Or, just watching all the other cool events).

I watched the Celtics/Lakers game at the Port last night. The bartender, Breezy, seemed to think this ride was an excellent idea. She said the Carlsbad location is awesome, so it's good we're doing lunch there.

I'm back...What did I miss?

Sorry, I've been 'out of town' for a while and haven't checked in on the thread. I think the rider list is up-to-date so send me a message if you need your status updated. A route slip is in the works, so hang in there (and invite some friends).

Please note, for the guys coming down from Irvine and points northward- I don't see much of a point in telling you which route to take. You all see to know what you're doing so feel free to coordinate amongst yourselves. Just make sure to be at the main starting point in North beach San Clem on time.

Remember, this is a chill social ride intended for beginners and casual riders. I have some local friends who aren't on this board that might be joining us which should make for a pretty awesome sized group.

Cheers!

After reading this thread, debating it, hemming and hawing and all the other things that comprise "dithering about" and how now come to the conclusion that I'm 80% from Irvine. This will probably be the longest ride I've done to date, but it sounds like fun. Ooooh, we get to ride the old coast highway. Yeah!

In the end it was the promise of pizza at the end, and potentially twice, that swayed me. Really, how can you not go someplace where there is pizza at the end?

So count me in at 80%.

Now if I could only get my regular riding partner to man up and try this as well.

You'll have fun and it's a good way to broaden the pool of "regular riding partners" too. Once you go on these rides and start networking you will find you don't have to coax anyone into riding with you again.

Okay, when did this turn from something to do on Sunday the 27th to something to do on Saturday the 26th? Damn it, that means I can't do it due to work. And I wanted pizza!!

Saturdays are bad. Sundays good.

Okay, that moves me from 80% in to 100% out. Grrr!

So I do some asking around and got someone to cover for me so I could go on the ride... and then "bad news" round 2 hit.

Well, it's not really bad news. But it yet again means that I can't go for a ride.

How the hell did I manage to schedule my pedicure on the same day as this ride? Of course, 5 weeks ago I didn't know that there was going to be a ride on the 26th... but still... what the hell??

So, given the choice between going on a fun ride and getting ingrown toenails, the health of my feet wins out. After all, bad feet = no riding.

I now have what is officially the lamest excuse for not going on the ride given yet. Anyone care to top me?

You schedule pedicures 5 weeks out?

EvilEuro
07-19-08, 12:06 AM
I'd say that's really sweet of you to say... except I'm a dude. Hell, I go with a buddy of mine and we get them together so we feel less gay about it. :) We're always the last two appointments that our gal takes on a given Saturday. After we're done we butch it up by getting a pizza, drinking beer and watching war movies to restore our manhood.

I don't have painted toes when I come out of it, but the one thing I do know is that my feet and legs feel like a million bucks when I'm done. Can't top the foot and calf rub at the end of things.

And yes, if you've got a gal who is good at pedicures, you schedule your appointments on a time-table and my schedule is once every five weeks. Keeps the toes feeling good and chicks dig a guy who doesn't scratch the crap out of the back of their legs in bed with jaggedy toenails. :)
