:notamused::notamused::notamused:Lincoln has decided to build a bridge and improve one of the trails here (http://journalstar.com/articles/2008/07/22/news/local/doc48863a6a63386974571041.txt#blogcomments). While I have never ridden on this particular one, ive read that it extends out of town into one the more scenic routes around. Yea! Lincoln. But, like anything, no good deed goes unpunished. Here is one of the comments from someone right here in town:
" the citizens of lincoln want to know about expenditures and some of them wonder where their next meal is coming from and we spend money on a bridge to service bikes and pedestrians. This mayor and city council remind me of the bush administration and the gop. "

Ummmm? So, improving access to greenspace, freeing traffic up from having to worry about running over someone crossing an arterial, and providing a safe route where one didn't quite exist (thus encouraging more people) is apparently a bad thing. I'm all for the arena thing they want to build here, too, but Ill get more use out of this than I will an Aerosmith concert (Lincoln only has 225,000 and is an hour from Omaha and Council Bluffs.....I can dream, can't I?).

I HATE WHINERS! I HATE IT THAT PEOPLE ASSUME IM A GRANOLA CRUNCHING HIPPIE! (I couldn't just survive on granola-that's why im in here!) IM REALLY TIRED THAT IT'S ASSUMED WE DON'T PAY FREAKING TAXES-PROPERTY, WHEEL, ROAD, GAS, ETC! Just because a lot of us own bikes that (in my case-'86 Chevy Cavalier, remember?) are worth as much as a used car, doesn't mean we can't/don't drive or live in huts and make bombs.

Okay, Im done, for now.

Usually the people that will complain about a $5,000 expense to help cyclists, would have no problem if the town was going to spend $5,000,000 to add space for cars...... It's peoples priorities, they don't really car about the people who are starving, If they were they would be volunteering at the soup kitchen, or would making donations to the local food bank, tt's just if they say "why isn't the money being spent on facilities for cars", they will look like the environmentally insensitive, lazy schmuck they really are......

Obviously, anyone walking or riding a bike is poor and doesn't pay taxes. And the poor don't deserve as much as the rich, all of whom drive because they're the only ones that can afford gas these days. In fact, if they're walking or riding a bike, they're probably illegal immigrants and should all be deported. They should use the money to add extra lanes to every major street in the city. They can convert all the sidewalks to car lanes because they won't be needed after all the poor people are deported.

Wait...your town has sidewalks or bike trails? WTF? We don't even have those here.

People just don't get it. I vote that all of us car free people on Bike Forums join together and move to one town. My dream will come true. When i am long gone.

You're right, they will. You can't please everyone. We have a MUP unfinished here because they can't find funding to reinforce the trestle across two waterways. So instead of one 22 mile MUP we have two disconnected MUPs.

The same people that don't want to pay for the bridge because people are poor are the same people who don't want the government to give handouts to the poor in the first place. Just show that the bridge will increase the efficiency of the community and they really don't have a leg to stand on.

To find out what the Bush administration and the GOP think of multi-use paths, read this:

That's pretty typical run of the mill trolling if you ask me. The only way to make that little gem any better would be to toss a godwin on the end.

Don't feed the trolls.

Wouldn't that be a premature use of Godwin's Law? There hadn't been much argument before it.

Maybe so but the poster of that statement broke form by combining phases 1 and 5 therefore allowing me to skip to phase 7

Phase 1: Make a head asplodingly stupid statement.

Phase 2: Be called out on it.

Phase 3: Your stupid.

Phase 4: No your stupid.

Phase 5: It's Bush's fault.

Phase 6: Bu..bu..but Clinton

Phase 7: Godwin

Phase 8: ???

Phase 9: Profit

Feel free to add to this.

I like how they *****, even though GPTN raised 10% of it, and the other 50% came from the Government.

Morons.

As an aside, I've been waiting for this particular bridge for the past two years. I'm literally giddy knowing that it might just finally be done, allowing easy access to a nice 50-60 mile ride without crossing much in the way of streets.

OP was quoting an opponent of the trail/bridge, not blaming Bush for anything. Premature invocation of Godwin - fifteen yard penalty and loss of down.

I find the same people that opposes bike paths/lanes and rails to trails are the same mofos that ***** about bikes on the road. Sickening hypocrisy. They also whine loudest at high gas prices while driving autos with poor mileage.

Oh, it is George Bush's fault.

Dont'cha just love when the price of gas goes up 2¢, it'a a major news story, and they always interview someone at a gas station whining about how the government needs to reduce the taxes on gas. Also it ain't a guy driving a Smart, Fit or a Yaris, but someone driving an SUV that gets about 10 miles on a $100 fillup.

Like to see them interview a guy on an Allez sometime, who says "Price of gas doesn't bother me, I don't use any".

Okay, I'm going to need an explanation here: who is Godwin and what does his law state?
Also, 15 yards AND a loss of down!?! Pretty harsh!!! Not even the evil post-touchdown celebration gets that severe a penalty (and we all know how much celebrations hurt the game!)

Basically it goes back to Usenet. The longer a thread, the better the chance that somehow Nazi's will be mentioned

" As a Usenet discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison
involving Nazis or Hitler approaches one."

How likely is it that someone who assumed you were a "granola crunching hippie" would also call out the GOP? Rants lose points when you complain about people stereotyping you at the same time that you're using stereotypes.

Alathea

I feel quite comfortable stereotyping myself and some of the riders I know-in NE if you ride a bike a lot you are 1. homeless, 2. a college kid, 3. don't have a car, 4. a granola crunching hippie. I bought a lottery ticket last night on my way home and the counter person quipped that if I won I could buy a car. I didn't stereotype anyone but myself-the posters in the comments of the article maybe, but I didn't mention the GOP in my post anywhere. I tend to revel in the stereotypes of military personnel, as well, but as one (former) I feel Ive earned the right to make fun of myself and the group I was a part of a little bit. Hypocritical? Maybe a little-but better, I think, than sweeping generalizations about Republicans or religious folk, or anyone that I DON'T necessarily identify with.

I did edit my OP, though to reflect more generally towards myself, though.

Pretty much by the time the Nazi's are mentioned, it means the thread has degenerated to the point where the discussion is over and a flame war has begun...the useful life of the thread is over

The penalty for killing a discussion should be pretty harsh :)

The price of gas affects everyone, regardless if you use a car or a bike. It should be bothering the people that aren't directly using it as much as the people that do. Of course, you get the people saying, good, let the price of gas go up, it'll get more people out of their cars.

It also forces the price of everything you buy up. Food? More expensive now. It cost me $4.25 or so for a gallon of milk now. Hell, I'm seeing stories of fishermen and crabbers in this area that can't afford to work now. They can't build the price of operation into their prices because of competition from China.

High gas prices are good for no one.

(Note, I traded my pickup in for a Fit.)

Ha, I missed this post the first time around. Clearly, we're getting irritated about the same LJS articles!

I don't use that trail section for commuting, but just last Sunday I rode that whole area from the downtown UNL campus out into the gravel section of Mopac a few miles and then back downtown, just to check out that section of the trail system. It's pretty nice! Now there are some orange fence barriers around both sides of the road for the official start of construction. It won't be long--it's supposed to be finished in the spring of next year.
