View Full Version : Are rest days determined by consecutive days of cycling or miles?

I just started commuting to work. It's 13.5 miles each way, so 27 miles every day. I'm a pretty fit guy and average around 17.5-18.5 depending on what streetlights I hit. I do try to push myself some to get some work and training in.

My question is, since I'm not riding 40-100+ miles each day, is it still beneficial for me to have rest days? Is the lack of high mileage days enough for me to avoid taking a day off?

I do ride at least on Saturday mornings with a group of other fast riders for 35-45 miles.

What schedule would you put me on?

Thanks,
Matt

I would take at least Sunday off. Listen to your body, if your feeling tired don't push it during your commute. Recovery doesn't always mean time off the bike, but sometimes active recovery on the bike (easy miles).

I don't like fixed schedules.
Lately I opt more for recovery rides with the occasional rest day. If you are exhausted and consequently have no desire to even look at your bike then take a rest day.
If simply a bit tired then a recovery ride is in order.

I reduced my mileage to roughly 200 miles a week and take one rest day mainly due to family obligations.
I say it varies person to person. Do what is best for you.

Depends on what your goals are. If it's just to ride and have fun then there's no need to change what you are doing unless it's not acheiving those goals.

I usually backoff and take it slower on commutes when my legs are achy or if I have a longer ride coming up on Saturday. When my legs are fresh I push it more.

I try (and often fail) to have at least one non-cycling day per week, but then I do about 30-50 pretty fast miles a day
