have an obsolete, JIS (27.0) crown?

I just discovered my new 1" Kinesis carbon (with cro-mo steerer) fork won't fit the standard (26.4) crown race on the headset I wanted to use. So if I want to use this fork with anything other than a (cheap, heavy) JIS headset, I have to have someone (LBS: "Oh no, WE can't do that.") mill the crown from 27.0 to 26.4.

This isn't a NOS fork... Are some modern (okay, I know 1" isn't entirely modern, but still) forks still being manufactured in the JIS size?? And why?

Well, one approach is to find a machine shop or a buddy that has a lathe, chuck that sucker up and take off the extra diameter to bring it to 26.4.
I've done it many times with nothing more than a file and a steady hand.
You mileage may vary.

I'm sure some shop has a 1" steerer mill in their tool box from back in the day of 1" steel forks.

Did you or someone else actually measure the crown race seat?

I've used emory paper and patience to solve this problem, myself.

Maybe they figure that by using a slightly larger diameter the fork is compatible with JIS and the standard size. I really thought that most LBS's could mill that down for you in two shakes.
