Sorry about the vague title of this thread; I couldn't come up with anything better.

For the last several years, most of the people I've befriended have been older than me by at least a year or two. My closest friend is two years older than me, and most of the people I hang out with are in that same age range. With the exception of one woman, I've always dated older and most people commend me for thinking differently than most people my age.

On top of this, I live several miles away from my school alone, and commute to work every day, where most of my co-workers are several years older than me (guessing at least 10, minimum). When I'm in school, I still commute and spend very little time at school given the time needed to commute back and forth. Thus, I spend little time with college students (at least from my school).

Thus I pose a question: Does being with older people make you feel older involuntarily? What I mean by 'feeling older' is just having a clearer sense of life and its upcoming challenges, and avoiding the 'stupidity' that many teens/almost-adults would make (especially that which is promoted by college life).

Not a chance. The people I count among my friends range in age from under 10 to over 70. I learn from all of them, and I think the correlation between age and wisdom is weak at best.

It would appear you're just smarter than your age group. Nothing wrong with that.

There is no doubt that hanging with stupid people will take its toll. Older people are not necessarily less stupid, but being exposed to experience is a good thing. Having a mix of friends of different ages is a great balance in ones life. It would benefit us all to have friends that are older and younger than ourselves.

My bestest "girlfriend" is a man who I've known for at least 20 years --- ex-husband and boyfriend had to get used to the fact that I had this other "man" in my life - and he's 12 yrs older than me. Yet I do not see him as 62. He surely doesn't act it. Perhaps it's cause he's always been the bad boy - which I like to be around I guess.

And OTOH - I have friends who are 20-25 yrs old - who I mtb with - and they do not make me feel old and I'd like to think I don't make them feel old. (hell - keep up with me! :D).

Yer as old as ya feel. And I for one do NOT act my age either.

I've only been able to associate with adults, even in my early teens. Kids my age didn't "get" me, or how I spoke or why I rode bikes all day.

Chronological age does correlate with maturity. You appear to be a bit ahead of the game.

And bypassing the stupidity is not a bad thing.

It can also be a double edged sword, though. Sometimes, if you hang with old fogies, you act like an old fogie as well. ;) Balance in all things.....keep your youthful outlook along with maturity and stability.

most of my favorite people are 20-somethings; yeah, I'm old enough to be their mom. Maybe they just hang around 'cause the pantry's stocked....

hahah....well people who are TWO years older are hardly old fogies....

I've found that a lot of people i get along with are younger than I am. I look younger than my age and I guess because i've never had kids, I don't have that sort of 'mom' attitude. I like music that is new, not just from my own generation- good music is good music! i see videos for new bands and think they're great! Also, most people my own age are married with kids...i'm single again after like 15 years and I also find that the guys I'm dating are also younger than I am. Not by huge amounts, but I can't see myself with someone who's 60!

Hmmm.......like bannerjek, I too count friends in the 10 to 80 range. Wanna feel and look younger? Take up rock climbing. All my climbing friends look and feel a minimum 10 years younger than they actually are.

the correlation between chronological age and maturity exists only to a point. I know very immature 60+ year olds and very mature teenagers.
