Advocacy & Safety - Oahu One cyclist dead, one critical - 2 collisions

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
The dead cyclist was left to die by a hit and run driver over night.

They think he would have lived if he got help right away.
The critical cyclist appears to be a wrong way rider.

And now all the idiots come out of the woodwork to make stupid comments. Newspaper links below:

The TV news update is not yet linked, but tonight they seemed to imply the dead cyclist might be at fault because he May not have had lights? This even though the cyclist was on the shoulder of the road and some even believe the cyclist may have been walking the bike.
The Mom of the cyclist posted on the Star Bulletin Newspaper site.

Kids former teacher from Honolulu Advertiser Site:
A couple of things ... First, if there another way to the North Shore other than this highway? I don't really think so. Second, I teach at the school where this "dumb kid" just graduated. He was a charismatic young man who had many hopes, dreams, & aspirations. I doubt seriously that dying because he had no other way home was one of them. His job was providing him a way to afford to go to school. He was being responsible for himself and his commitments. This is a tragedy and your comments are deplorable.
Assuming these people are telling the truth.

Aldridge may have been wearing a helmet. Police found a helmet at the scene. Police have not told us if Aldridge had a light on his bike or if it was equiped with reflectors.
"We have to do our part to be very visible," said Jeffrey Dang, who sells bikes and safety gear at McCully Bicycle & Sporting Goods.
According to the law everyone riding at night must have a white light on the front of their bike and reflectors on the sides and back of their bike.
If you are traveling over 10 miles per hour you should be either on a bike way or bike route on the street," Nakagawa told KGMB9.Oh ****, I did not know I was not allowed to cycle on roads not designated as bike routes. That takes out 80% of my daily commute route. Oh my, what am I to do. And this BS from the Executive Director of the Hawaii Bicycling League.
Reading that quote in the context of the other quotes in the article, I think that he is simply saying that while people ride on the sidewalk because of a perception that it is safer, if you are riding over 10 MPH, you should be either on a bike way or in the street, rather than on the sidewalk. I don't read the quote as saying that you are limited to riding in streets designated as bike routes.

But enough motorist here believe cyclist are only allowed on bike paths or roads signed as bike routes. Sadly, as written, this reinforces such wrongheaded beliefs.

Hopefully you are right. But enough motorist here believe cyclist are only allowed on bike paths or roads signed as bike routes. Sadly, as written, this reinforces such wrongheaded beliefs.I think you can relate to this: A few years ago, I was riding along Kalakaua Avenue on my way to the Hawaii Bicycling League Century Ride. Just before the police substation, a lady driver tried to use her sports car to force me off the road. She yelled at me to get on the sidewalk. Luckily, I flagged down a police officer who came to my assistance. He detained the lady driver and allowed me to proceed to the start of the century ride. What a surprise that lady driver was in for when she encountered thousands of bicyle riders up the street at Kapiolani Park. Aloha, and let's be careful out there.

I certainly can.
I once had a women run me off the road near Pearl Harbor Naval Station. Honolulu City and/or state designated the sidewalks and bike side paths in that area as the "Official Bike Routes" and not the roads. As such, they put up “Bike Route” signs and under that a sign that said “USE SIDEWALK” next to the sidewalks and bike side paths. When I caught up to the women and asked why she ran me off the road, she referred to the sign and stated that I was “required” to use the sidewalk. I informed her that the sign only indicated that was a designated bike route and cyclist had the legal choice to use the sidewalk or road. At that point she yelled, “get on the sidewalk”. Yelling back and forth continued for a couple of minutes.

I once had a women run me off the road near Pearl Harbor Naval Station... she yelled, “get on the sidewalk”.What are these cagers thinking? They are using their vehicles to physically attack us on our bikes to teach us some sort of lesson? Pedestrians in the cross walk and bicyclists riding properly are getting killed in Hawaii!!! Where's the love...or should I say, "Lucky you live Hawaii." A hui hou.

FWIW I happened to ride w/ Mr Nakagawa on Bike to Work Day earlier this year on regular city streets, sometimes well over 10 mph. It might be that he was misquoted by a clueless journalist -- wouldn't be the first time
The family ask for help in finding the killer.

They find the killer, and as usual he is undercharged. Hopefully they will add charges later, but based on Honolulu history, that is unlikely.
Arnel Ulep Abuluyan was arrested at 2:30 p.m. yesterday on suspicion of failure to render aid in the death of Aldridge, 18.
The father of the family survives 2 tours in Iraq, was preparing for his third but the son is killed by a speeding and likely drunk/drugged driver riding home from work in Hawaii.
