Professional Cycling - Input please: Paul Sherwin's most annoying phrases

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. 1. "All the heads of state are there"
2. "you can bet alarm bells are ringing in the pack"

Haha...You could probably make some kind of drinking game every time he says one of his taglines!
Seems like he says "front end of the main field" quite often or the the "field has been lacerated" by a particular rider, breakaway, etc.
(I do really enjoy Paul & Phil though)

'I want to make hot man love to Lance'. That one annoys the hell out of me.

It's the repetition of what Phil says...
Liggett: The Alp is a brute of a climb.
Sherwen: It is a brute of a climb and... (etc)
Liggett: Sanchez has lost big time on the descent.
Sherwen: He has lost big time on the descent...(etc)

Brilliant.:thumb:
I think Paul is relying more on his pet phrases this year because he doesn't have much time left after correcting all of Phil's mistakes. It seems that things are "all going a bit pear-shaped" for old Phil this time around.
See how I snuck in another one in?

This is fun and all, but last night I made the mistake of flicking the channels and catching the evening wrap-up with Craig Hummer and Bob Roll, and my gawd, they are freakin' painful to listen to. Could be partly due to their American accents, which sound grating by comparison, but still, Phil and Paul are veritable fonts of Shakespearean eloquence when put up against the likes of Craig and Bob.
This thread is completely and utterly on the rivet.

Yes, I have to agree with you there. Along about this time each year, all the announcers begin to bother me, but Hummer is terrible. I suppose it's possible he's knowledgeable about cycling, but each time he demonstrates his knowledge, it seems like he's reading from "The Handbook of Cycling Jargon."
I got a bit sick of hearing about "rarified air" during these alpine stages (except the one time he said rarified earth instead - which was kind of nice, if only for the novelty value)
You got to hand it to Paul though for being pretty smooth on correcting all of Phil's mistakes. Phil just couldn't seem to figure out that Cadel Evans was not in the lead group on the last climb yesterday.

broken his duck.
i watch the TDF on a Eurosport stream because no verses. One of the comentators often uses the phrase "gently slipping away" or "gently sliding out the back" or something like that when one of the sprinters or non-climbers gets dropped by the peleton on the HC climbs. Recalling the days when I was 60 pounds heavier and got dropped all the time on climbs....there is nothing gentle about it.

You reckon Phil is loosing his bottle?
I am no big fan of either of them, but it has got to be pretty hard, carrying a 5 hour broadcast without being too repetitive and making an occasional fool of yourself.
This thread is just starting to get very grippy.

You know, I think that's kind of a new-ish one. I don't recall him using it in past years, unless my hearing was impaired by excessive beverage consumption. Nevertheless, he does seem to be using it a lot. Maybe he comes up with a new one each year and tries to see how many times he can work it into the broadcast. "Losing his bottle" seems to be recent as well.
I remember him in past years saying 'looking resplendent in the yellow jersey' quite a bit.
i'd give anything to do the phil and paul drinking game! i miss them!

"He's riding like a man with three legs" about Soler last year was a true gem... one of my all-time favorites.
"He's all over his machine!" is also a personal fave.

Any time they refer to Jens Voigt as a "beast of a man". It never fails to crack me up.
"whaaa i dont like Vs. coverage...boo hoo...."
Oh wait, Paul doesnt say that, everyone on the TDF forum does...sorry.

The numorous ways a rider can be dropped off the back are my favorites. Straight through, decanted and dislodged are just a few.

Do they get decanted before or after losing their bottle?

On the Alp stage he referred to someone as a Big Bad Boy, first time I heard that one made me laugh though. I think he got tired of Big Man, Massive Man, Hard Boys and is just starting to mix it up.

I have watched MOST of the tour this year and still haven't heard it so far. I'm a big fan of the suitcase.
This year's word is big.
- Big George Hincapie
- Big Jens Voight
- Big Thor Hushovd
- Big Mark Cavendish
- Big Johan Vansummeren

Then it will be time to light the blue touch-paper.
Was it the Alpe D'Huez stage when he was talking about Jens Vogt and said "ANd there is SPARTACUS the GLADIATOR!"
