Noob question here.

I'm currently having a bike being built and I'm opting hard to go with SRAM (red most likely). My question is, later on when I want to build various wheel sets for different conditions/applications...what are my compatability issues?

Most wheel sets I see say Campy/Shimano compatible...but no mention ever of SRAM? Do I just need to pay attention to what cassette I put on the new wheelset?

Last of all, would it be failsafe just to put a Shimano Cassette on any new wheelsets and leave SRAM for everything else? I'm confused on this one.

SRAM and Shimano cassettes are compatible with each other (hope I worded that right). This means SRAM cassettes could be installed on a Shimano compatible wheelset. You could also put on a Shimano cassette to use with your SRAM drivetrain.

So if I built a bike with SRAM, buying wheelsets is a no brainer? Field is pretty much wide open?

Running SRAM Rival on my Spinergy Shimano wheels with no problems!

Make sure the freehub on the wheelset is Shimano 10 speed compatible. SRAM Rival/Force/Red are all 10 speed drivetrains.

Non-issue. Any 10-speed Shimano/SRAM cassette will fit any 8-, 9-, or 10-speed* Shimano-compatible freehub. 10-speed cassettes are slightly narrower than 8- and 9-speed, so a small spacer is usually required to run a 10-speed cassette on 8- or 9-speed specific freehub.

*Caveat: Be sure to avoid the aluminum Shimano 10-speed wheel/freehubs (e.g. WH/FH-7800), which has taller splines and are only compatible with the matching cassettes.
