He didn't see the pedestrian splayed on his windshield?
So after either hitting a person and leaving the scene on purpose to avoid the consequences, or being so senile and ignorant that he didn't notice the person laying on his windshield, he was allowed by police to drive away?

"I've wanted to be a racecar driver all my life, and anyone who has watched me drive can tell you that,” Novak said.

Probably the problem with half the drivers out there... they all think any road is part of the Indy 500.

Gee what a guy.

The cyclist has got some baws to stand and block a crazed maniac's car. I wonder if there was damage to the car?

What happened with ticketing him with fleeing the scene. Lousy little failure to yield ticket, that is disgusting.

He didn't see the pedestrian splayed on his windshield? He's lying.

Somebody who truly didn't see the pedestrian splayed across his windshield would have expressed surprise-- "I hit somebody? Where? " This guy didn't express any surprise. Instead, he said "I didn't see him there." And by "there," he meant his windshield, which means he certainly did see him "there."

Ergo, he's lying.

When you're someone like Novak, you view everyone else as bugs. So it doesn't surprise me that he didn't see the ped hit the windshield, after all, when was the last time you paid attention to a bug splatter on your windshield. :p

Re the title of this thread, at what point does "attempted" hit & run become hit & run? Because Novak apparently drove on for some distance, and was only persuaded to wait for police after e was physically blocked from fleeing any further. In my book, this wasn't an "attempted hit & run," it was a hit & run.

I hope the pedestrian sues him for every penny he's got.

A Politico reporter saw Novak in the front of a police car with a citation in his hand; a WJLA-TV crew and reporter saw Novak as well.

<serious sarcasm> Bob, Bob, Bob. Don't you know that if you're going to hit a pedestrian with your car and drive away, don't do it in front of a blogger and a news crew (http://youtube.com/watch?v=FgHXJeX_Kzc) witnessing it.</serious sarcasm>

I mean, really, you didn't see some 60 year old (http://www.tmz.com/2008/07/23/novak-swings-too-far-right-hits-pedestrian/) man splayed out on the hood of your car?:wtf: Time to get them eyes checked.

Wow, he hit a 66 year-old, ignored the body that was splayed on his windshield, and kept going! I would have been afraid to stop my bike in front of a car that had a body splayed on it.
I can't believe they only cited him for failing to yield right-of-way.

... I can't believe they only cited him for failing to yield right-of-way. I can. That's part of the problem. If you are rich and/or famous enough, you can get away with all sorts of offenses.

That's what happens when you are a member of the elite - you get to obey whichever laws make you feel happy at the time. Must be nice.

I do foresee a civil case in the future...

As punishment Novak should be forced to go around the country preaching about driving safely and using himself as an example of what not to do.

Personally, he should just have his driving privileges removed. Are drivers over 65 supposed to be re-tested in Washington? How could this a-hole even pass the test?

Novak has conveniently grown a brain tumor as a defense:

July 29, 2008
Robert Novak Has Brain Tumor
By RICHARD PÉREZ-PEÑA

The columnist Robert Novak has a brain tumor and will stop writing and making television appearances, at least temporarily.

“On Sunday, July 27, I was diagnosed with a brain tumor,” Mr. Novak said in a statement on Monday. “I have been admitted to Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, where doctors will soon begin appropriate treatment. I will be suspending my journalistic work for an indefinite but, God willing, not too lengthy period.”

His office in Washington declined to give more information, but referred a reporter to statements made by his assistant, Kathleen Connolly, to The Chicago Sun-Times, the home newspaper of his column.

In an article on that newspaper’s Web site, Ms. Connolly said that Mr. Novak and his wife, Geraldine, flew to Massachusetts on Saturday to visit their daughter, near Cape Cod. On Sunday, she said, he was taken ill, but she did not elaborate. He was taken by ambulance to the hospital, and admitted to the intensive care ward.

Ms. Connolly added that Mr. Novak is alert and talking — he dictated the prepared statement, himself — and that he will undergo a biopsy at some time in the next few days to determine the kind of tumor he has.

Mr. Novak, 77, is one of the most prominent political journalists in the country, with a widely syndicated column he has written for 45 years, and regular appearances on television shows. His memoir, “Prince of Darkness,” was published last year.

He gained an added measure of notoriety in 2003, for being the first to publicly identify Valerie Plame as a C.I.A. operative, a leak that became the subject of a lengthy federal investigation. A small-government conservative on most issues, Mr. Novak has parted ways with Republican orthodoxy at times, including in questioning the justification for the Iraq war.

Last week, while driving in Washington, Mr. Novak struck a pedestrian, who was not seriously hurt, and said later that he had not been aware he had hit anyone. It is not clear whether the brain tumor contributed to that accident.

It's one thing to hit some one when it's your fault. It's entirely another thing to leave the scene of the accident which you caused. Personally I have no mercy what so ever for a hit and run coward. It has nothing to do at all with a brain tumor given the guy's history of road rage.

Good on the cyclist, but would he do the same thing if it was a fellow cyclist, who ran into a pedestrian?

Because seeing so many dangerous Brisbane cyclists, there wouldn't be enough cyclists who don't ride in a safe manner to report a fellow cyclist acting in a dangerous manner?

While Robert Novak certainly is a [bodily orifice], a brain tumor is a reasonable excuse to not be able to see properly. My grandmother got pulled over by a cop who saw her car was damaged, though she had no idea this had happened. It turned out she had brain cancer, but she was spared because she was not Robert Novak.

Your point is valid as far as Novak hitting the guy. What the brain tumor doesn't address is the run part of the 'hit and run.'

By all accounts, the pedestrian hit his windshield. Even with a brain tumor, I would hope that a driver would be able to see something that hit his windshield.

The thing is here that his brain wasn't working. My grandma had absolutely no idea she had hit anything until she was stopped by the police, even though her car was thoroughly scraped up. Even today, after the cancer has been defeated, she still can't see anything more than, say, 20 degrees to her left.

Robert Novak is a bad man who's done some indefensible things in his life, but this isn't one of them.

While Robert Novak certainly is a [bodily orifice], a brain tumor is a reasonable excuse to not be able to see properly.

If that's the case, then it's also grounds for taking away his driver's license immediately. In fact, upon noticing such impairment he should have surrendered it voluntarily!
