Touring - Around Lake Ontario

I recently spent 5 days cycling around Lake Ontario.
It was an easy ride in terms of hills.
I followed the Seaway Trail on the American side; a very pleasant ride.
On the Canadian side I used Hwy 2 mainly; not as pleasant for cycling.

Nice report and great pics. It looks like you travelled pretty light. How long were your days and how fast were you wheeling? A 279km day....wow!!!

I've wondered about doing this tour but on a tandem. I'm definitely bookmarking your site.

I travelled very light; just a fanny pac with a change in clothing; you can see it in the pic taken in Youngstown.
With the winds behind me it was fast while riding but i stopped a lot to take photos. I like to leave early; 7am if possible. Except to my last day i was at my destination by 2pm. I highly recommend the Seaway Trail. Only the last bit into Cape Vincent - without a shoulder and heavy traffic - was not pleasant but there is an alternative route for that stretch ie; HWY 6 instead of HWY 12E. Great report, brought back pleasent memories. I did the trip last year fully loaded. 9 days 1050km in the opposite direction. I accually rode the Erie Canal from Rochester to Lockport instead of the shoreline. The Waterfront Trail is a better choice than Hwy2 from Kingston to Cobourg and not much longer. You did some long distances, a long day for me fully loaded is 160km with 120km about average. It depends on how many things I stop to look at. You would of gone right past my house @ Grafton, just east of Cobourg On.

In particular, you should check Brian Hedney's site at http://www.hedney.com/waterfront.htm which does a pretty definitive job on cycling from Toronto to Montreal (or Gananoque in this case if you're circling Lake Ontario). It has some deviations from the posted Waterfront Trail that are more cyclist-friendly. A full set of maps for the Waterfront Trail is available from http://www.waterfronttrail.org/ .
