Training & Nutrition - Breathing

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I am new to biking this last summer, and have my legs in pretty good shape. The problem is breathing. When I hit hills I seem to run out of air and have a lot of trouble breathing. I searched the forums and didn't find anything specific. Any tips on how I can work on this would help greatly.
P.S.
When I say my legs are good, I mean 20-40 miles on my road bike or 1 hour (dying) on the trails....still a newbie
Thanks
It gets easier. Just stick with it. Focus on breathing out controlled, the air will come back in.
Hehe,
hikers and backpackers ( I used to do both) have the same problem. It's hard, but you can do it. The only real trick to is ride hard, prefefably somwhere with a big hill or mountain, about once a week. If you do it regularly, you and your body will get used to it. But it will will never FEEL easier because you will wind up going further or faster. But damn it feels good sometimes, at the top of a mountain.
I would also suggest a visit to your doctor.
I entered my first MTB Race last September. I was unable to finish the race due to breathing problems. A visit to my doctor revealed that I have Asthma. (excercise induced)
I now have an inhaler (sp) I use prior to my rides and during if I need.
I can now climb better. Ride longer at a higher heart rate.
See your doc. :)

When you exhale do it forcefully your body will naturally take in more air on the inhale.
Blow out and allow it to flow back in normally. It may seem weird at first then it will come naturally.
