Touring - Death Valley anyone?
Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I've spent a fair amount of time hiking around DV, but I've never ridden there. Has anyone toured the park and at what time of year? what route did you take?

It provides a couple of route suggestions.
Fantastic, thanks very much for the tip.

I've ridden in Death Valley several times and supported several long and ultra rides. Go in mid winter. Late November through February. I rode from Furnace Creek to Bad Water one night in August to support a Century ride on Eastside Road. The group started at 7:00 PM and it was 117 degrees F. See if you can contact Dave Reese who was a ranger there the last I knew. He is a real supporter of bicycling. A route for the old Death Valley by Moon-light Ride went from Shoshone, south of the park to Stove Pipe wells. One double century went from a casino just over the Nevada border through Amargosa Junction to Furnace Creek, up to Stove Pipe, down to Shoshone and back to the casino. A side trip to Scotty's Castle is good too. Dirt riders have more options and higher risks. Consider going with a bike tour group the first time.
Sounds good. I'll give it a try in November. A bit of training to do, another really great area close by DV is Saline Valley. Totally unearthly. You really feel like your on a planet there- great hot springs oasis, bristle cone pines, amazing views, but it's all dirt and very sharp rocks.
I cycled across Death Valley at start of May 2000. Even then we had high temperatures of 104 to 108F:
I've also camped and hiked through Death Valley in President's Day weekend in February (no biking). Nighttimes were nippy but days were pleasant when I went.

If you go through Rick Gunn's posts on his trip (incredible reading and photography in any case, even for those not doing Death Valley), you will find he's posted about cycling Death Valley at night... he found a friendly man and son to escort him with their car and light the way.
