Hi i just opened up my new SRAM PC-99 chain and noticed it was covered in this sticky type grease? should i remove this stuff with some simple green? or it is safe to leave on?

I believe that that gunk is some protective type grease that they use to keep the chain looking good while it gets shipped and sits in the store.

The big problem that i've found when i haven't taken that stuff off is that it attracts dirt and grime like crazy. Is it actually bad for the chain to leave on there, i'd say no. But i'd definitely clean it all off really good and then throw some real chain lube on there.

That stuff, I call it cosmoline, is just a preservative. It is best to remove it. I use clean streak(carb cleaner works good to) and a rag. Then lube with my favorite stuff.

Timely topic. I just got a new PC99 chain, and found that grease to be pretty stiff in the cool weather. I thought about taking the chain off and soaking it in solvent, but instead cleaned it with a spray lube/rag.

After a couple hundred miles now, and a couple treatments of dry lube, the chain seems to be breaking in fine.
