Seems like either nothing going on, or everyone is doing the Santa Cruz Challenge (which I am not doing, so don't ask). I'm thinking of doing a ride from Los Altos, through Stevens Canyon, up Redwood Gulch, climbing Hwy 9 through Saratoga Gap, over Skyline, all the way to Woodside, then back. According to Bikely, it's about 48 miles. Anyone interested?

I'm thinking of doing this Saturday, and I'll start from the Peet's Coffee at Homestead and Foothill Expy around 9 am.

Are you talking Saturday or Sunday? I'll go with you if it's Saturday, but no can do for Sunday as I'll be doing the Laid Back ride in Yolo/Solano counties. Let us know.

Oops ... forgot about that detail. I'm planning on Saturday.

You forgot the short hill that leads up to King's Mountain. A more technical descent than 84.

After Redwood Gulch, the rest of the route is very easy. Skyline is very scenic when there aren't lots of motorcycles around.

Do tell. I'll be in Felton, then in Santa Cruz for my wife's Wharf to Wharf. Is this a bicycle garage sale?

I did extended version of this one last Sunday, except I turned left on La Honda and went down to the ocean and up Tunitas before riding down King Mtn to Woodside and went through Sand Hill and Junipero Serra to Foothill.

Dude, I didn't get to work today 'till 11am.. so yes, 9 is early! Gotta leave home by 8 to make it on time, and at 8 this morning I was dead asleep.

Okay, okay, I'm in. See you guys there. Planning on riding to the meet, but if i fall behind ... well, it'll still take 5 minutes to put the rack on the car.

I'll be there somehow. Starting to get my **** in order before i start partying tonight...

good ride, fellas! thanks again for putting this ride up, Ron. Nice riding with all of you. Let's do this again soon. (I propose the next ride to involve OLH for Reid's sake. Can you believe this guy did Death Ride training wtihout having once getting on top of OLH?)

Ok, Death Ride, but no OLH? I propose we take a list of hills he hasn't done, and make a series of rides out of it.

OLH?
Kings Mountain?
Montebello?
Mt. Hamilton?
Mt. Diablo?

Anyhow, thanks for coming out guys. Couldn't ask for a more perfect day, and the company and the ride was just perfect.

The actual air temperature was a lot hotter than I thought it was, and this day could have qualified for a sleeveless jersey day.

1jacktripper gets the sandbagger award today. He was always the first to the top of all the climbs today. He was even doing hill repeats, by the time I got to the top of Redwood Gulch! Oh, BTW, did we mention he is a triathlete, who has an event coming up next week? I think he's ready for it.

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w112/spingineer/Redwood%20Gulch/P7250060.jpg

Reid did make it to the start (despite the partying he did the night before). We all felt honored being in the presense of a death rider.

The stretch on Skyline from Hwy 9 to Hwy 84 is great. Not too much traffic, and not too many motorcyclists buzzing us. Our ride went without incident, which is a good thing!

Thanks guys for coming out.

Thanks, Ron, Reid and Jack for a really great time! Yeah, I'd say Jack's ready for his triathlon next week, setting a blistering pace (based upon me not seeing him after about, oh..two turns, on every uphill section we tackled :p), and Reid and Ron took turns flattening the rollers on Skyline. Nice job on that descent of 84, too, Reid..it's too bad the truck was in front of you, but at least the guy knew how to go down a hill. Yep, the mileage and temps were perfect today, and I still have time to watch Sastre put it away again, and again, and....

'Looking forward to the next ride guys. Hey, I know, let's do the connector to Black Mtn at the top of Montebello! :D

Sandbagger? That's the most honorable name I've ever been called! Thanks, guy. It felt good todaayo, so I thought I'd put the legs to work. Love the pictures, by the way. I think Reid did his Captain pose much better. Mine was out of alignment.

I propose we do a 1) OLH and Kings Mountain ride and a 2) Montebello and Moody ride. As for the East Bay ones, I might have to plan that a bit to go up with you guys.

Dudes, you dudes are crazy descenders. I almost bit it on one section of 84 trying to catch up with you guys. My self-preservation genes kicked in and I decidedly stayed way way back.

We did stop by the 9&35 rest stop. We didn't know the food was free though. They were looking very delicious, but we didn't feel right taking them without having registered first. We also passed OLH&35, but only saw a few folks standing around and did not see any sort of promotional stands/booths.

It didn't even creep into my mind to take any food because I know we aren't part of the SCMC ride. Didn't want to be a "bandit" rider.

Ya gotta commit to your turns! Brake, turn in, man up, and go for it. Only way to make your line is to commit to it and hope for the best :) It was a lot easier with the truck in front of me because I knew if he could make the turn, so could I. And you could see the exit on most of the corners just before you dropped in.

I did clip one bump on the left tire track at the exit of one of the corners, which was inconvenient because there was oncoming traffic. I guess that's the problem with having a large vehicle blocking your view of the pavement the whole way down!

Yeah I didn't think of taking any food either. I almost felt odd just standing there near them.

Thanks for the pics Ron!

It wasn't a stand or booth. It was guy giving out free Gu and Power bar gels with an info card for upcoming cancer benefit ride. They were only 100 calories each though.

If you take a look at this map (http://www.openspace.org/preserves/maps/pr_monte_bello.pdf) you'll notice that it's possible to get from the top of Montebello over to Page Mill Rd. That's why I made that drivetrain comment on yesterday's ride. ;)
