I found this site researching information on bike I ended up purchasing on line. I am a firefighter with 4 generations living in my home, working two full time jobs (98 hrs per week). I was lifting weights for building mass and swimming for flexability. I don't run sprints due to a prior ruptured achillies tendon and had to take some time off from weights and swimming due to shoulder reconstruction. I am back up and training again and want to do a sprint triathlon.I have already recieved some good advice/info from ny first post and look forward to getting more into cycling in the future. My bike arrived damaged so I'm still waiting for the repair shop to make needed repairs.

Hi navyffp, it sounds as if the cycling will help keep you sane. That's a lot of work hours, and a lot of people with different views at home. What bike did you get?

Purchased a GMC Denali due to budgetary contraints. If I really enjoy triathlons, which i think I will, then I hope to move up and by a real bike next year. My wife wants to be sure before we spend alot of money on a good bike, which I concur. I got what I could afford right now to get started. So far it has not been a pleasant experiance. Jost posted a thread under tiathlon about that.

No, it sounds as if you encountered a bad LBS. A shame...

For what it's worth, you might want to learn to make basic repairs on your own, such as repairing flats, getting derailleurs adjusted, etc. A tune up on a bike isn't that difficult, and will save you a lot of money in the long run.

Don't get discouraged though...

Use to do alot of repairs on my ten speed when I was a teenager prior to obtaining a drivers license. Will probaly try to do again. You are correct, the tune up was $70.00. The thing I have no experience in is adjusting the spokes, but I can learn! Anyway, can't wait to hit the road again.
