Regarding hills, I live on a steep hill. So I can easily speed up to 30mph just by coasting downhill. And coming back, I can measure how good my hill-climbing ability is just by seeing how far uphill I can get before dismounting. After spending several hours riding, my desire to pedal uphill pretty much fades away.
