For the longest time, I never could figure out what this thing is. I can't even venture a guess. Some sort of kitchen tool?

pot holder...some camping pots do not have a handle. That clamps onto the side of the pot and gives you a handle.

Ahh.. the winner! after half an hour of Google searching, Amazon lists it as a pizza tray holder but will work for lids and pots too.
