Folding Bikes - downtube NS vs a smaller bike for train rides

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I like my downtube NS, I think 2007 model. However, when I fold it, it is still quite large/heavy so I can't lift it up to stove it away on SEPTA trains in Philly. Few times during peak hours, I was denied boarding and despite nice e-mails from SEPTA apologizing for it, it does not help that I lost an hour. So I am thinking of switching to a smaller bike, either the 16" mini downtube (I have to see if Yan would take in my bike for a decent price, or I have to sell it-- I can drive to his store in Philly) or something even smaler and still affordable, perhaps E-Z-Pack folding bike (http://ridethisbike.com/products/Sdwndr/E-Z-Pack-folding-bike.htm) but I do not know if it is any good.

Ofcourse, I would rather not do either of these, I like my bike, I like its size etc. Is there a quick way of hiding it, i.e. some bag that I can carry with me , put the bike and turn it into a luggage. The give away bag is not of much use. The one downtube sells, does not look like something I can carry with me easily.

Yan has a bag that he sells. The Mini is pretty cool. I am enjoying mine.

I assume we are talking about this one:

does it really attach well to the seat-post and is comfortable to ride with it? Can I store a small backpack in it?

You may want to look again at the specs of the two bikes. They're virtually identical in weight. The Mini has an internal hub that weighs 4 lbs by itself. The folded dimension of the Mini is a tad smaller, but from personal experience, I can tell you that it's not that much different. I'm not trying to talk you out of the Mini. It's my favorite folder. But you should be aware of the specs.

What's your budget for this?

Ooo. good point. I have not seen in folded. I am thinking of limiting my budget with whatever I can sell my existing bike. I did not decide yet.

Do not get the EZpack/Kent Ultralite--as far as fold goes, the Mini is smaller, and it's not that comfortable if you're above 5'7".
