If you mean you can move the lever w/o it engaging at all (pulling cable), flood it with WD40, carb n' choke, any solevent that makes you real dizzy, 'specially when you're inhaling it from a plastic bag. If you're lucky it'll start working again. Otherwise, yes, you probably need a new one.

If it moves and pulls cable, it probably needs an adjustment, maybe new cable and housing.

indeed this is likely one of the few quick fixes for STI levers, the ratching arm inside the lever is likely "gunked" up and the spring will not let it fully engage into the cog. Your only other option if this does not work is to fully disassemble the lever, however depending on the grouppo and year of your lever you will need special "shimano" tools which of course are special order items.

The WD40 trick works pretty well. I have an old set of RSX 7-speed STI levers (which were slipping on upshifts) that I was ready to replace with a set of barcons when I heard about flooding the shifter with solvent here on the Forums. Now they work like new. It's certainly cheaper than a whole new lever.

Cheers!

Same here.

Darn lever would move, but the derailler would not shift. Had to move lever several times before it would engage the derailler.

Filled 'er with WD40 then used one of those 'canned air' sprayers to clean it out also (used to clean computers). Lever now works great!

I was not happy to learn that a shifter would cost me $150 Cdn. OR I could buy a new set of levers, of course only in 9 speed, which meant I had to get a new rear cassette also. Oh that would mean about $300 for Shimnao 105 levers and rear cassette just because one lever stopped working!

F#$king Shimano!

P.s. I'm okay. I'm okay. Calm....blue ocean. Calm....blue ocean.
Serenity now.
