I almost lost the Taxi Bike. Before I start…Yep I know cable locks suck and I’m an idiot for using one. I don’t enjoy carrying boat anchors around to exercise and run errands. The cable worked for close to 20 years for me. My rule of thumb is not less than a minute out of eyesight.

I stopped at the drugstore to pick up my prescription and figured on a ride afterwards. The store I go to is the fastest and a fairly safe area. I’ve done this a bunch of times before, but I guess my stars were bad today… It took about 20 seconds longer today. I had some one new at the register asking how to do everything.

I had two bottles in the bag and I thought it was the wrong prescription, but I needed to check my bike, so I headed for the door. Just as I get out the door I see some ScumBag! Walking my bike away from the post I locked it to and swinging on to the seat to ride off I somewhat blanked into a rage! I ran and jumped on his back the bike went down hard with him on top and me on top of him and I just started pummeling the slime like an insane person I felt two shots hit his head hard as he scrambled my knuckles hurt. As he ran I pushed him into the side of a moving car he finally started to stagger, I was about to finish him of and send him to SF General and right then someone behind yelled so I turned my attention on the other guy thinking that he was the accomplice! Nope! Just someone who thought I was having so a bit of road rage.

I grabbed my bike to go after the punk as he headed up the ally…Yes! No witness’s but both my brakes were locked up. I fixed them but the adrenaline was messing my up. I grabbed my cable lock that had been hacked, but yanked a little hard and it snapped back and the lock part chipped my front tooth. Now I was really pissed. I took off through the traffic not even slowing for the red lights but I couldn’t find the jerk! I HATE THIEVES!

I perched hidden for awhile hoping he’d come back. I finally gave up and headed home with chipped tooth and sore knuckles and resolved to never use my bike for errands till I get a boat anchor!
Lesson learned!

I actually read all that.

Good work. Lemme buy you a beer, sir.

Is it me, or has the economy gotten so bad that the number of thieves is on the rise? Two co-workers got their cars stolen this past week, two road bikes in the forum, and now Pete.

Sheesh --I'm not sure if a chipped tooth and sore knuckles are the result of good luck, but sounds like if you'd been a couple of seconds late you'd have seen this guy riding off into the sunset. Well, live to fight another day.

I read in a Seattle paper today where some creep broke into a house to rob a couple and threatened them with a gun and they beat the living crap out of him with baseball bats. Yahoo score two for the good guys. http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/372049_robbery25.html

I'm so glad you kept your ride, but the tooth part sucks.
I'm opposed to the death penalty, but for bike theft I think it should be like the old west: Just shoot 'em. No need to clog the courts with a trial.

I'm almost suggesting a sting, complete with mace and stun guns....

Oh! Hows the bike?

I always wonder what you can get away with if someone is messing with your property. I guess I wonder this because my car got keyed recently.

I think at least one really good hit is fair game. I mean, I'm not gonna tap the guy on the shoulder and kindly ask him to wait for the police to arrive. And I'm not gonna wait for him to swing first. He's getting hit with the largest, cheapest bottle of wine I've got in my grocery bag, and he's gonna get hit hard.

Sure, my life isn't in any way threatened. But one hit is fair game, right?

Knowing my luck, I'd end up with a jacked up ride *and* jailed for assault.

Sorry for the chipped tooth and scuffed up knuckles, Pete. But I'm glad you gave that moron what he deserved. Heal up fast!

Don't mess around with Pete!

All the years I lived and worked in NYC, I never had a problem with my bike (and I rode it a lot). Then again, even when it was new it never looked like anything special (it was a Trek 1000 that I picked up cheap because of cosmetic damage). But stuff like that can happen anywhere. Glad you're OK, and that you got your new toy back.

Here's a thought - maybe switch to speedplays? Most idiots looking to steal a bike wouldn't know what to make of those little lollipop pedals!

I think what's really interesting is that there is ablsolutely no logical thinking process at all! Just directlly to the Lizard brain, don't pass go...Afterwards you become all Shakespearean as you play it through. I kind of just blacked out from rage...Not the first time either :( somtimes it is nice to touch base with the real self ie. Monkeys throwing Poop!~

Wow, what a story. I'm glad you didn't lose your bike or that he didn't hurt YOU in the process. You are one feisty son-of-a-gun and apparently he found that out. I hope you are able to get that tooth capped pronto, you don't want it to get worse. Dang, that was close, huh? Amazing how something made you go out and check on the bike....

Did you ever get your prescription?

Wow. Glad you saved Jodie. Good job teaching the punk a lesson. Too bad about the chipped tooth, at least you didn't chip it holding a half full water bottle between your teeth... after the ride.

that rage that draped over and made you do violent things...pretty serious stuff. definitely lizzard part of the brain.

sorry to hear about the tooth, but it might be a chance to file said tooth into a fang. how cool would that be, flashing the fang as you pass people on the left?

Unfortunately the law would not see it this way, especially if the sequence of events unfolded such that you *really* beat the crap out of this guy. Fortunately, most people would be on your side (as shown in above responses).

My take? Sometimes, the law's an ass. Well played. :thumb:

I think I'm going to go back to being Pheobe for a couple of days... I'm going to be with some Velo girls tomorrow and I need to get out of my Lizard Brain and back to Sugar & Spice and everything NICE not Snakes and Snails and Pit Bull Tails...! :)

I'm really glad that everything ended up with the minimal damage! As mentioned above the law won't be one the side of the victim if everything unfolded as described in op. with that said I support beating the crap out of this scambag. good job, Pete! as for that moron, he probably didn't learn anything.

Brakes were messed up from the fall but I fixed them. She slept in the apartment with Cathy's pony last night. Poor thing was traumatized...

glad you kicked his ass. You should have bit his ears off, and gouged out his eyes with your thumbs. A good fish hook would do him good too. who knows maybe a head butt would learn him manners.

Holy chainring tatoo, Taximan! That's awful and amazing! I'm glad you and the bike are okay, and sorry you had to become the Lizard (and chip a tooth in the mayhem).

People who steal are lower than low. I hope you taught the scumbag a lesson.

So, when will that next ride be, now that you mention it? :D

Maybe we can all meet up for the Marin. When we rode together for the Wine ride, it was a great time!
I like a repeat of that. I'm actually riding up from SF ...No car now... so it will be a long day for me.

Oh, I almost forgot that you're doing Marin, too. Okey-dokey, artichokey, we'll see you there!

I have to get a move on, we have to be in Davis for a laid-back ride. ;)

Enjoy your car-less day!

Exactly why I don't leave my bike anywhere. I always expect the worst. If I have to I just take the bike in the store with me. I get some strange looks but nobody has ever said take it outside.

Funny, I've walked thru safeway with my bike and didn't think twice about it. It wasn't until now that I realized, duh, they have bike racks (but I don't own a lock). Of course my bike takes up less space than a shopping cart, so who would complain?
