I believe EZ fire is the name shimano gives to the budget end shifters and etc, I don't know if its a different system than Rapidfire.

the shifter on the ez fire is not that much different. The trigger that shifts down is on the top rather then on the bottom. You are correct when you say they are used on budget bikes.

In addition to what mindbogger said, EZ-Fire shifters are only sold in combo with the brake-levers I believe. There's no independent pod offering. And yes, they are only offerred on the lower-end of the lineup (Altus and Acera) and can only shift up to an 8-speed rear derailleur.

The materials used both inside and out. Higher end LX XT and especially XTR will shift smoother and cleaner.
