Southern California - Newport Coast Stats

Does anyone have the stats (distance and elevation) for these hills in Newport? Thanks in advance.

Newport Coast to the top of Ridge Route
Spyglass to El Capitan to San Joaquin
Bottome of Shady through Summit Park to the Top of Newport Coast
Ridgeline to Turtle Rock Drive.

My local ride, I'm hoping there are enough of you out there that do the same climbs.

You can use google maps and google earth to get these stats, you can use maps to get distances and earth to get altitude. I would give you stats from my Polar, but I've been off the bike for near 3 weeks and don't remember what files go with which ride.

www.bikely.com will give you elevation information.

Do a search in 'road cycling' forum. I asked the same question there a few months back and got some numbers on NC Drive and, some info on mapping sites.


Try Laguna Canyon Road out of L.Beach yet? Not a hurting climb, just long and steady.

Newp Coast Drive w. the Ridge climb on the end is best appreciated at the end of a 40+m. ride, on Saturday a.m., in the rising heat, with about 75 other group riders blasting their way up. Not too long (1.8 w/o Ridge) but it's got enough bite for me when I'm drained out.

Newport Coast (PCH side) is a 1.9 mile climb with an avg gradient of 5.3% with 529 feet of vertical gain

Newport Coast (Bonita Cyn side) is 4.4m/2.56%/594 feet

Ridge Park is 0.9m/9%/429 feet

Spyglass is 0.7m/7.3%/270 feet

Summit Park is 1.8m/3.9%/377 feet

Ridgeline is 1.86m/4%/393 feet

These stats were from a HAC4 Ciclosport computer. You will get different stats from every computer but I like my Ciclosport and my VDO MC1.0+ These computers are very close to most advertised rides stats.

thanks for the info. the elevation was not as much as i thought it'd be. i'll add 500ft to each climb when i tell the guys in the office about how much riding i do.

Uh...I think you messed the NC from Bonita Cyn stuff up...I have it at 1.84 mi 4.1% Avg Grade

Also, my stats on NC from PCH is 1.7 mi at 5.8% Avg Grade...that's to the "summit"...I'm guessing that yours is to the light.

Fun ride tonite up the Canyon. Figure it to be about 8 miles with a grade of (?) - I don't know yet. It's easy because of the tailwind in the afternoon.

I rode it tonite (5PM) and averaged 19.2 all the way over and down to the exit off the 73 ramps. It's pretty cool to be ascending and doing 20+MPH passing cars.

Just go back down and climb it again and again. That way you can climb 10,000 feet if you want and not have to lie. ;)

I find Ridge Park to be easier than Vista Ridge. They both hurt right now in 39x23. Gonna have to pump some leg iron this fall!

That's kinda weird since Ridge Park is steeper (same vertical gain in less distance).

Vista Ridge, 1.25 miles/427 feet/6.47% avg./ max 12% (lower avg because the flat part in the middle, but has a steeper pitch at the lower climb)

Ridge Park, .91 miles/429 feet/8.9% avg./max 10% (seems harder because more consistant 9-10% to the top)

I come from Anaheim, SART to PCH to Laguna Cyn to Irvine Center to Harvard to the bike trail to Portola to Jamboree to Santiago Cyn/Katella back to Anaheim, on my fixed gear.

Park Ave. 2.0 miles/980 feet/9.3% avg./20% max.

Nye's Place, .70 miles/500 feet/13.5% avg./ 20% max.

That makes a lot more sense. I've never thought of that as a climb before but I guess it is :)

As much as I'd like to be out climbing GMR everyday, Newport Coast is a little more convenient to do repeats on before and after work. If you do it enough times, it's certainly worth keeping track of and though it's not perfect, it's a decent alternative to driving an hour there and back to Mt. Baldy at the cost of $30 for gas.
