Hi all, just wondering what everyone thought of this bike I found on E-bay. What would you be willing ot pay for it? Sometimes stuff on e-bay sells for WAY over what its worth so I didnt want to over bid! I was thinking about buying a new LHT until I saw this baby. Any thoughts? I realize that someone from here might bid on the bike :( but I would rather take that chance and get a second opinion about the bike rather than get ripped off. Thanks!

I'd say given that a new trek 520 goes for 1200, comes with a lower quality rear rack, no fenders, and a seat that you'd probably replace before hitting the road anyways, that seems like a good deal. Though, with nine hours left the price could skyrocket up to a significantly less good deal.

What would you be willing to pay for it up to the point where it would be better to just buy a new LHT?
I seriously thought about bidding on this one. In fact, I did place one bid early in the auction. But I already have a good rack, and the gears on the front crankset don't thrill me for loaded touring. I placed the Surly LHT on order earlier this week. My LBS is swapping out some components to make it just the way I want it. (Schwalbe Marathon tires, KoolStop brake pads, fenders, Brooks saddle, aerobars)
Plus the LHT comes with 26" tires. That may be a downer for some, but not for me. I need to toe clearance once I get fenders installed on a 54cm frame, plus I can buy the tires almost anywhere in the world if I ever get to do any "real" touring. The LHT also has lower gearing.
But either way, that Trek 520 is a NICE looking bike. If I were bidding on it, I'd probably go to about $600 or so. But consider you have to ship it as well.
Good luck with whatever you choose.

all I know is I had the same bike sans the fenders and rear rack at a local Bike shop here, and it took me begging someone to take it for $250, next time I flip it.. :)
had NO idea, they would go for that much

$766 plus shipping seems to be a little high for that bike, in light of the fact that you could get a brand new LHT for $930 from a certain mail order place. You can get fenders and a rack for about the cost of the saddle you would need for the 520.

I really liked that bike. Deore DX is similar in quality to XT, IMHO, and a similar quality bike would cost well over a grand. THe hubs can be repacked, chainrings replaced, and its like a new super high quality bike.

Actually that's the beauty of ebay; items sell for exactly what they are worth.
Looks like a beautiful lugged bike and with much better tubing than a LHT. DX was great stuff. Whoever won that auction did pretty well.

sounds like it sold for a price that both the seller & buyer are mutually happy with.
one thing, the seller certainly knows how to sell a bike on ebay (clear; comprehensive description, many clear and high quality pictures of most (all) parts of the bike.)

Here's a 520 that I picked up recently on e-bay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110255426875&indexURL=0#ebayphotohosting
Some thought I paid a bit much, but it's all relative - I wanted a nice lugged steel frame (this one's like new, and is a '93), and wanted to be riding instead of putting one together. I already had Jandd Expedition racks, a better saddle, etc. - I couldn't be happier with the deal!

I was watching that too. I have a 1997 Trek 520 but I would love a lugged steel one. Honestly though I would have only bid up to about $500. Obviously that is a good reason why I do not have one. This one seems to be worth more. I only paid a few hundred for my 520 on CL though.

:) This bike was calling out to me (and all the components were new). I picked up the bike - no shipping costs or damage in shipping (unlike my C-dale), and the seller threw in a nice set of panniers.
