He lost 2 minutes 36 seconds on that crash during the descent. Without that, he'd be in 2nd place!! He's 3:12 back now and without the lost time, he'd be only 36 seconds back of Sastre!!

one of the ways that you lose time in the TDF or any other race is by crashing. vandevelde was a revelation this year tho in what proved to be a pretty weak tour line-up.

Crashes are a part of the game. Unfortunately. It sucks. Trust me...
He got dropped on the climb too though, which is why he was being dangerous on the descent.

He had a great tour. But he lost 35 sec on the climb and the other 2 min taking to many chances on the descent with the crash. A better way of looking at it is if he had ridden within himself on the descent and settled for a 35 sec loss he probably would have made the podium. But he didn't. Menchov lost some silly time that could have put him in second. Cadel probably wishes he had pushed sooner on Alpe d Huez. Should of, Would of, Could of. Sastre did it. Thats racing.
