Commuting - Help! Armadillos rub on fork

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I just replaced some badly worn Michelins for Armadillo Turbo Clinchers. No matter how I adjust them in the bracket, they don't seem to seat without rubbing against the fork.
Even the Michelin 23's were tight, but these seem taller.
At even a lower PSI of 100, how do I get these 23cm's to fit?

I hate to tell you, but you may be out or luck. I have found the Armadillos to be larger overall than other tires that are nominally the same size. To me a 23 mm Armadillo looks as big as 25 mm from other manufacturers, a 26 looks like a 28, etc.. You just may not be able to use Armadillos on your bike. There are other brands with Kevlar belting. Or you could use liners or Performance thorn resistant road tubes. For commuting I use all three!

Raymond

I concur. I set out to buy 28s and when I saw them went with the 26s. Good tires though. The 1st 2 weeks on my current commute I had 2 flats riding by the car crusher place. Switched to the armadillos last spring and haven’t flatted since.

Dumb question, what bike cant take a 23mm tire?
I thought I had it bad when my Schwinn 584 wouldn't allow a 32mm rear, and I have tried 4 diffrent ones.

RR,
Some of the newer forks area really narrow. They will handle 23s and even some 25s, but Armadillos really are large, both in width and height, for their nominal size. The first Armadillos I ever tried were 26mm, and I swear they were noticably larger all the way around than the Conti 28s I had on before them.

RainMan,
O rats...I never posted the solution to this problem. Yes the 23's appear more like 25's The bike shop was able to move the fender mountings back to give more clearance in the fork. All works well now.
