Mark your calendars now! Southwest Frameworks is (finally) planning a vintage ride and picnic, with emphasis on the picnic. We've set the date for 12:00pm (noon), October 5, 2008, with the probable location being White Rock Lake. We will supply hamburgers, hot dogs, homemade potato salad, and cold drinks. We might even print a commemorative (and highly collectible ;)) t-shirt. If you want anything else, please bring it!
The plan is to meet at one of the covered picnic areas, do a little vintage bike riding, have some food, and admire the vintage bikes. If it rains, we just eat and admire!
More details to come. I'll set up a mailing list and a page on our website for those interested.
Stay tuned,
David Cheakas

Oh Man, it's a Sunday. Great for most, unless you work deep nights on Sunday nights/Monday mornings.
However, there is a little thing called vacation days!

Sounds good to me. I may bring Goldie to show off some of David's painting.
David, sounds great. I was planning on doing another vintage ride in early October myself so this plan works perfectly. Going to throw this out for any interested parties:
I plan to start from RBM Richardson (or somewhere very close to), ride down to White Rock for the Southwest Frameworks ride. Time TBA, but likely to be 12:30ish to make it down to the lake with plenty of time to spare. From RBM down to the lake, and if we decide to do a couple of laps around the lake, then back up, figuring that would put us at around 46-50 mi for the day?

Hey David!
I'll be sure and mark my calendar for this, sounds fun! I'll bring my Ciocc that you painted, thats now decorated with older Campy stuff.
Thanks, Jere
I'll be there on something dutch (duh) or I may just bring the Pogliaghi for show only!

Hey guys,
I've received quite a few off-list replies so it sounds as if we'll have a pretty good turnout. I've also received some inquires about what "vintage" means in this context. I'll go by what Dale from Classic Rendezvous says. "....bicycles made from the early days of the Twentieth Century, up to 1983.” I think for our purposes, anything up into the late 1980's. Maybe early 1990's if you promise to bring a dessert tray...
I'm going out to WR today to scout a location, so I hope to have that nailed down in a day or two. Joanna is about to finish a web page with all the details. That also should be ready in a day or two. She's done a real nice poster. I'll post it as a PDF if anyone is interested in printing it out and taking it to a bike shop for their bulletin board.

Big Thicket is always a nice place for a BBQ - plenty of parking, bathrooms, an there are swing sets and a slide nearby if you have kids (not sure if this is a family encouraged event or not....)
Anyway - I'll be there!

Hey riders,
Break out the wool, find the hairnets, and air up the sew-ups, we've finalized plans for the first annual (maybe) Retro Ride and Picnic!
Details:
Sunday, October 5, 2008, 12:00 noon
Tee Pee Hill, White Rock Lake
We originally scheduled this for 2:00 pm, but looked at the crowds on Sunday and decided it was better at 12:00 noon.
This is more of a picnic with vintage bikes and their riders. The idea is to meet at noon at the pavilion at Tee Pee Hill, have lunch, then if anyone wants to, go for a few laps around the lake.
Southwest Frameworks will supply hot dogs, hamburgers, chili, homemade potato salad, cold drinks, and cookies. If you want anything else, feel free to bring it. I'm not sure if alcohol is permitted at the park.
I'd like to get a head count so we don't run out of anything, so please let me know if you want to attend. It also might be fun to get a list of the bikes that will attend.
Right now the plan is that Joanna and I will get to the picnic spot early to stake the claim. However, depending on the advanced headcount, we might opt to reserve the larger pavilion just to make sure there's enough room for everyone.
We're also working on a t-shirt for the occasion. I'm sure it'll be a much sought after, highly collectible e-bay item soon after the event. I'm trying something different this time. Instead of just giving them away as I always do, I'm offering them for sale for the cost of printing them, which rounds up to $5.00 each. This will also go to help defray the cost of food for the picnic. If you're interested in the shirts please let me know so I can print enough of them. As I say, I've always given my shirts for free, so this is a new thing for me.

I'll send out more information on the picnic, including a link to a poster Joanna is putting together. Feel free to forward any e-mails and links to others who may be interested in the picnic. The more vintage bikes the better!
Let me know if you want to be taken off the list.
Keep those old things on the road! Of course I mean the bikes...

And I'm planning to bring my 5yo daughter and her hello kitty bike with training wheels. Is there a spot nearby she and I could ride without her getting run down?

Right now, I've got an inquiry out to ascertain if I have a vintage bike or not. If so, I will try to be there, though probably won't get there until 12:20 or so. And it'll just be me.

Is anyone interested in riding with me down from RBM? I'll be departing there some time around 10:45 to ensure we have plenty of time to get down to White Rock Lake. Shouldn't take more than an hour's ride even at the most relaxed of paces, but a little buffer is always good right?

Fortunately you'll only have a 15 mph headwind on the way down :-) Looks like I've probably made other plans for Sunday. You guys have fun!!!

I can deal with 15mph on the way down. It's on the way back that I'd rather not have the headwind.

I notice that not many put the date of any event in the title of the posts here. If they did that the turn out would probably increase since anyone reading the forum could quickly see when the event was scheduled and make an informed and even last minute decision.
I've been noticing this.
Oh, and I had put this one on my schedule only to later remember we had a previous family event and could not attend. Dang!

Just realized I missed this event. Got busy with other things. I will try and make the next one.
I love that flat black bike with the medic kit. Very cool.
That flat black bike was a real Swiss Army issue bike. The owner was telling us all about it. It was heavy and built to take the abuse a soldier would dish out on it. He said part of their training is learning how to jump off the bike and fight, so that finding one without damage is hard.
His came from an ammo depot and had not seen hard use.

Hey guys,
I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who attended. There were some great bikes there! Any thanks for running the event really have to go to Joanna, my sister Catherine, and her husband Jesse. Jesse did all the cooking, and Joanna and Catherine did everything else. I just hung around and had all the fun! It got a little disorganized near the end, but I think everyone had a good time. Joanna and I tried to say hello and visit with everyone, but I know we missed a bunch of people. Sorry about that. I did get a chance to see several people whom I haven't seen in years. Also, a special thanks to everyone who brought food, paper plates, drinks, etc., that really helped a lot.
A few people suggested that we shouldn't wait a year to have another picnic. I was thinking that maybe we might have one in the spring, but have it open to non-vintage bikes as well, and just serve chips, finger food, and cold drinks. Then in the fall have another Retro Ride & Picnic. Let me know if you'd be interested in a spring picnic. I'm also taking suggestions as to the time and day. Saturday or Sunday? Earlier or later?
Again, thanks for everyone who attended. If you have pictures, please let me know. I'd like to put them in an on line gallery, or at least put links to them on the webpage.

I was thinking about Saturday for a spring event, then Sunday for a Fall event.
By the way, I forgot to mention that I still have a few t-shirts left if anyone wants one. They are $5.00 each if you come by to pick them up, $6.00 if I mail them. I have large and x-large. 100% cotton and they do shrink! If anyone wants medium or small let me know. I still have the screens set up and will print more if I need to.

I'm interested. I would suggest stressing the retro aspect even in the Spring, but not requiring it, something like "Retro and Friends" or something catchier. Either way, though, I'd like to get out there next time. My youngest is a senior in high school so no more marching-band-dad stuff for me after this year (which takes up my weekends in the fall).
