There are already some great sites like bikely.com that provide routes based on input from other cyclists. Also, if you are searching for a route, using gmaps pedometer http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/ in satellite mode can get you through some great back alleys.
I'm not sure what the next generation of mapping will bring. I guess I can only say "Bring it on!"
