Foo - Work vs leisure?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
For various reasons too complicated to go into here, I'm considering cutting my work week from 37.5 hours to 30. The 20 percent pay cut will suck, but in reality, it shouldn't be that drastic, as I'll lose less of my weekly paycheck to taxes. I'll still be eligible for full benefits. Has anyone else here gone through a similar situation? How much of a financial adjustment to your lifestyle was it? Any regrets?
Right now, I'm seeing the upside of another day off to ride, run errands, recharge my batteries. I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around the full financial implications.

I love my job man, I work sat, sun, mon 12 hours each day. So I got four days off to ride! Find a job like that.

Seven more days of work and I am off for five months! Yeah man, I would take the cut in work time and just be more frugel.

That's cool! My wife just started working a "float" shift at a new hospital... she works 3 days per week, 12 hours per day and the rest of the week she's off.
It's going to be great once the weather warms up and we can do more than just sit in front of the open stove rubbing our hands together!!
Burrrrrrrrrrrr, it's cold in the NY area today! :(

I have recently cut my hours and wages. Hours from 50+ to 40. Wages cut by 42%. It was not my choice but I'm not sorry it happened. I've always been a budgeter, so it hasn't hurt to bad. But while I have more time and energy to ride, I won't be able to afford some things I want to buy.
Do your planning carefully and figure your expenses honestly and realisticaly and you'll know what you can do.

I've got an even better plan. I have 21 working days left. I'm retiring!

If I had my way I would work part time and ride. Too bad I can't afford to. My new boss is a real machine and wants lots of hours with no extra days off. It is a constant fight. Right now it isn't too bad as I am only snowboarding but come summer time there may be a breaking point for one of the two of us.

i've been working approximately 40 hr weeks for the last few years... and actually my goal/dream would be to have a job with 25-30 hours per week... the problem is that it can be hard to find a job like that where you still get benefits, the same pay rate ("part-time" often has a lower rate) and close to the same possibilities in the position... (i.e. i don't plan to be running a company on 25-30 hours a week but doing something with some responisibility and potential for learning and growth) --- i'm in software development where most guys work 45-50hours/week, some a little more and some 35-40, but very few less than that...
if the reduction is linear, then for me it is definitely worth it - and you also actually have proportionally more as your taxes are usually lower... i think i could live on 1/4 of what i make if i were really thrifty (which i can be)... i ahve also considered working 6-7 months per year, but this can also be hard to arrange with employers...

hey, good to hear that you've finally picked up a winter sport - there, living in Whistler --- i hurt my knee hitting a jump 2 weeks ago skiing, but it's slowly getting better - been one-legged biking no skiing/snowboarding for another week i think...
as to the original question: i would definitely do it! if for some reason you need more money you can take on a 2nd job or a "hobby" job to bring in a little extra (i am a MTB Guide which earns me only a little but i really enjoy it)

Still nothing compared to biking. But it is adequate.
