There are a couple of Shimano 600 down tube shifters on e bay that look beautiful... Any thoughts on these? I am a newbee so I really don't know what the "vintage" value of them would be. I take it that it is a far cry fromt he Campi stuff eh?

Thanks

Oh, BTW, I just picked up that 1981 Colnago Mexican frame set on e-bay  Can't wait to restore that one!

The 600 was Shimano's top line which later became ultegra. There were several versions over the years, both friction & indexed. The earliest versions are quite ornate & all are top quality. My Motobecane Grand Jubile was set up with the ornate Shimano 600 group. They are still available in large numbers & can still be found N.O.S. so "rare" is a relative term. I think they give good value for the dollar. Don

Don,
Nope, DuraAce has been top of the line since first
introduced in 1976.

The 600 stuff seems to have no collector value what so ever. The ornate 600 gruppo is acually quite nice but it goes for next to nothing on ebay, making it a good choice for budget renovation projects. I have a few sets languishing in boxes in the basement. I took one of my 600 rear derailleurs and filed the logo off and smoothed its edges, did a drillium thing with 3 big holes and polished it on my buffing wheel to be like a mirror. It turns a few heads on my crud bike.
