Well... tentatively her name is Sterling the Flying Mule, but I think I really need to find a better name, one that has to do with extreme age or obsolescence or possibly time travel.
She is a 1976 Triumph Trafficmaster, a second-string counterpart to the folding Raleigh Twenty. She's mostly in good shape and everything is original, but the few parts I'm having to replace are proving to be a problem, like trying to find scattered bits of a dinosaur skeleton. The current dilemma is the missing rear rack, and the weirdness of the bracket it's supposed to be attached to, which is nothing like anything that roams the earth in the modern era.
I got her in April because of public transit strike fears. I ride her to work once or twice a week through ritzy neighbourhoods with big houses and old trees and horrible pavement, and sometimes through parks and cemeteries just for fun.
I haven't ridden a bike in years -- I'm thirty-one, and the last time I rode regularly was when I was sixteen and living in rural Ontario. When we first moved to a city I was put off road riding by nasty drivers, but Toronto is proving to be far more friendly (at least if I stick to the designated bike routes). I'm getting back into it, learning how to be mechanical and fix stuff myself instead of always taking it to the shop, and starting to think that if I hadn't moved to the city I might have ended up as a mountain biker... cross country looks like so much fun. I'd love to build a bike someday and I think I'll aim for a good hardtail.
