i'm consdering a new wheelset soon and was planning on getting the 2004 ksyrium elites. they've gotten rave reviews and sound like an excellent, strong, fairly lightweight wheel that would fit my riding style at a good price.

they sell in the $400-500 range.

meanwhile, the 2004 SSC SLs are available brand new in the $600-650 range, and i'm wondering if i shouldn't just take the plunge and go for the upgrade.

so, i ask you...

is there any reason TO upgrade?

is there any reason NOT TO upgrade?

will the weight savings (cut out rim sections, composite spokes and hub bodies) of the SSCs make the wheel any less strong?

FYI, i'm 6' 1", 175 and under lbs. i ride (a steel serotta) about 6K miles a year, primarily for fitness and the ocassional race. most of my regular riding is done in NYC parks with the longer weekend trips, so sometimes i hit some rough roads, but it's not too bad.

i'd save my ultegra/open pros for rain days.

SSC SL's are cooler looking and stiffer because of the alloy spokes.

Stay with elites and spend the rest on some other upgrade. Getawaybikes had them for 429.

When I purchased my 2004 Look KG386i last Novemeber I wanted the Mavic Ksyrium SL's, but since they went to an all SILVER rim and spokes I decided to go with the Elites and have been extremely happy!

Actually not stiffer, as the alloy spokes allow them to be a bit flexy. A rider in our group went from elites on one ride to the SL's the next (same course) and was geting brake-pad rub on the hills.

No the SL's are stiffer. Alloy spokes are rock hard and more brittle than steel spokes. They are also deeply flattened which makes them stiff, good power transfer.

For the same reason they may have more lateral flex because bladed spokes are much stiffer in one direction but weaker in the other.
