Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Bought a bike for my wife. How'd I do?

The condition of the frame, cranks, hubs and everything else appears to be spotless. The only issues I'm aware of are the mismatched tires (one is a 700X28 and the other is a 700X23) and it does not have track nuts. Also, the chainring is slightly out-of-round but still "acceptable" according to a tech that looked at it.

as long as she doesn't want to go fast and doesn't mind working a bit harder, i'd say it's a great bike.

I wouldn't consider mismatched tires an "issue" personally. Plenty of people run different size tires.

I also purchased her a front brake on the net. She wanted a top handlebar lever. Not exactly my style, but whatever...

It's a 55cm and she's 5'9''. She looks good on it, but I really don't know if it's ideal.

I would say it is ideal as women have much longer inseams than men. She probably has a 32 inch inseam and but a shorter torso, so it will work well.

The bike looks great and, as someone said above, mismatched tires are very common. Many people put a fatter tire on the rear for better traction.

Slap some track nuts on there and replace the chainring, BAM! Shes good to go! :thumb:

You are quite right.

If she enjoys riding it even when you're not around, I'd say you did pretty darned well. If not I'd say let her mess with it till it feels that way for her.

People put fat tires on the front for more cornering grip and a softer ride.

he may have meant not go-ing traction (spinning out) but stopping traction (skidding)

FWIW, I'm a 5'5" gal and ride a 53cm so that sounds about right. If she's comfortable on it then you did well.
