I did my first sprint yesterday and I learned a few things. (Ok I learned a TON of things but a few really stick out) I underestimated the swim more I thought I underestimated it. Yikes. 1/4 mile took me 13 minutes. Maybe it wasn't such a bad time for me, but the mental game was amazing. I did average 21+ mph over 17 miles on the bike and was very happy with that. My run was my usual slogging 9 min/mile. With a finish of 1:35:36 I was left feeling pretty satisfied at the end of the day.

Looking forward to the next one and seeing if I can move up in my age group. (I am 47 and finished roughly mid pack) I figure even if I don't improve a whole lot all will still be just fine. It is a great experience regardless.

Thats great, how long did you train for it, I am also new to the sport and am in training for my first. I am having a bit of a set back right now with a lower back injury which has kept me off the bike and running for close to a month now. I am still swimming so I am at least getting some work in.

I started a program about 3 months ago. Being a sprint I figured I could finish it with little actual training per se. (I learned a little about swimming in open water though - lol) But I enjoyed the routine of training and wanted to perform better during the tri.

Nice job. It's okay to underestimate your swim in your first few races. It's certainly better than overestimating it and having something bad happen.

Congrats p2000. Looking forward to following in your footsteps with my first tri (at 40). Yeah, I'm a little concerned about the open water difference as well. Currently I'm doing all pool training. As a diver I'm certainly aware of the differences, but what can I say? I don't like swimming on the surface of the ocean. I'd much rather be under it. Am I the only one here that's a little concerned about... you know.
