So I picked up one of the Blackburn X8 sets from Jenson seeing as the set costs $130 dollars, and most of the complaints about the X6 were about the horrible nimh battery which the X8 has replaced with a lion setup.

I've never biked at night before but on the test ride the setup seemed passable for me at normal speeds while certainly not adequate for quick downhills.

Has anyone stuck new LEDs into these? I like what I've gotten as a total package but I know the Lux III lights are the weak link. I've heard of people sticking P4s into these (Not sure how they stack up in the grand scheme of things) - I'd appreciate any info about cracking this set open.

Good question! I just received mine from Jenson today. Have yet to try them but I've read in other places about this lamp swap. Does it make it that much better and how mych are these other lamps?

Just wondering if either of you have some follow-up on the X8. I saw them on Jenson but have not found a whole lot of reviews. I'd be using the lights for commuting (some areas lit, some roads with no streetlights) and some trail riding as well.

TIA.

I'm not familiar with this light, but a google of it finds this review

I've had a set for a year now. I haven't modded mine to p4's yet because I've never really felt the need for my commute. Parts of my commute there are 0 street lights and the bike path runs next to a highway with my morning commute riding against traffic with a concrete barrier seperating the path from the highway. Instant blindness. But the x8's are bright enough that I can see through that. This is a downhill section and I can see well enough to crank it up over 20 mph on the road bike. (it's straightens out near the top but there are hazards on either side of the path.) I haven't thrown them on the mtb yet for night trail riding yet. I might be doing the Moab 24 hr race next fall and I'll probably upgrade the LED's for that. I love the remote for adjusting the output. Really helps on stretching the juice.
