so, today i went out for a little over two hours and spun the entire time (didn't even touch the "big" ring) on flats, maintaining a pretty high speed and cadence.

now, my left hip is sore. right in front at the top of my thigh it just feels tight, and when i touch it it sort of burns. my right leg is fine. i noticed it about a half hour into my ride. there isn't any swelling that i can tell, it just feels tight and it burns if i try to lift the leg from a sitting position. it doesnt' feel strained, because i can still stretch it without any sharp pains.

this doesn't happen when i ride fixed gear.

i noticed that my seat rails are kinda lopsided...it tilts down on the left side, but not that much...could that be the cause?

i also get terrible hip pain in pretty much the same areas on both legs if i walk too much. only a 1 hour walk around town will do it.

i'm 22 years old, and i'm not sure what my mom's insurance covers, and i'm not working right now, so i'm a little hesitant to go to a doctor. should i just take a few days off and ride again when it feels better? this is kind of important because i was planning on trying to get a job as a bike courier in february (it's all i can find right now). could this be arthritis?!

i'm not looking for medical advice, just maybe someone who's had a similar experience and can maybe tell what happened with them...

Do a google search for trocanteric bursitis. I think you may have that aggravated by either improper seat position, (but you state it also happens after prolonged walking.) or you may have a tight ileotibial band that makes the trochanteric bursitis worse.

What the doctor lady said...

Think of it this way...if you rode for two hours with a bad fit, and spun at 90 RPM for the two hours, you just put your hip through 10,800 repetitive motion events, while your hip was struggling to work the way it was designed to...that could be the issue. After a while, it'll hurt...
