This is probably more of a concern for my fellow southern-hemisphereans (?) at the moment - but what do you do about getting tan-lines you don't want? When I ride home, I ride in workclothes (long sleeve shirt, sleeves rolled down, long pants) because I don't want the sun on me, but inevitably I end up with a patchy neck and patches on the backs of my hands from my cycling gloves. I tried using sunblock for a while, but it doesn't mix well with sweat (and made my gloves stink ). Am I being silly? should I just ride in shorts and a tee and be done with it?

I say display those hard earned tan lines proudly! you certainly didn't get them lazing around on some beach somewhere!

I agree with CycleMagic. Ever seen a Tour rider out of shirt? They look like their torsos have been sprayed with white paint.

Personally, I tan extremely easily thanks to Grampa Torres' DNA. By April, I've already got the farmer tan. You can wear all the sunscreen you want, but if your skin tends to tan, it's going to.

As for sweat-proof sunblock, I like Coppertone Sport. (It's pretty widely available in the USA, not so sure about the RSA.)

Just make sure you give it a few minutes to dry before heading out.

Don't wear a shirt, don't get tan lines. Plus you stay sweat free, that's how I do a commute in the summer!

I display my tan lines proudly..It takes lots of miles to earn them...Sometimes, those unfamiliar ask how you got them..I am Only too proud to say.. My dentist originally thought golf..Not me...
I recall sittting in a lawn chair resting, after getting back from a ride. tan lines not developed yet....I intentionally did not take off my gloves and socks, trying to get my wings.

Get some really potent sunscreen. I recommend Banana Boat Ultra. It's the best available as far as staying on your skin when you're sweating goes.

I also use Banana Ulta..Sweat not effect it..Does not hurt the eyes...Luckily you still get a cyclists tan, if you ride enough...The industrilized world is really dumping on Australia's ozone? Apply it thick down there....?
SOme friends went cycling in Chile/Argentina..They said everyday shirts are rated for sunscreen blocking abilities.. They said even crops are effected in the south end of Argentina due to ultra violet poisoning?

I actually found the UV more severe in Tasmania than it is here in Queensland. I've also heard it's pretty savage in New Zealand. Of course, up here one sweats a heck of a lot more, so it can wash off sunscreen if you're not careful about rubbing it in properly.
