I've been primarily riding a road bike and have a desire to get a SS/fixed gear bike. I want a "flip-flop" rear hub so I can enjoy both worlds. Could you suggest a good starter bike please. I do have a small budget but want something simple but solid. The Schwinn Madison seems to be decent and it's in my price range. ($400-$500) The Trek Soho didn't really get me excited. What else is out there?

I just want a no frills jump on the bike and ride machine. No racing but perhaps some flat club rides. Mostly fun general exercise and some commuting.

Bicycling Magazine doesn't deal with these very often and I'm not sure which web sites are reputable or which manufacturers are best. You guys are the experts so I'm coming to you for advice.

You might want to consider a fixed road bike instead of a track bike, especially if you are thinking of doing longer flat (is there any other kind in DE?) club rides and general road riding.

This one from performance actually looks great to me for $299: http://www.performancebike.com/shop/profile.cfm?SKU=25174. I'm not positive the Alex r500 wheelset is flip flop, but I believe it is. I also lust after the Redline 925, for a bit more money.

I'd probably get a Surly Steamroller if I had $650. My LBS has my size in stock even. All the super cheap bikes from bikesdirect.com seem to be sold out in sizes that humans fit on.

I have a Madison, good bike for the money. I paid $380.00 for mine. It's a little heavy, but for that price you can upgrade it with some lighter parts.

i have an SE lager which i like, some here don't, some do. its been good to me so far. it doesnt come with a fixed cog, but thats not an expensive purchase.

and i like urbanvelo.org

but i havent been part of the SS/FG community for long so UV could be horrible, but i like them so far.

what about an iro? the complete mark v is 570, i know its a bit more than what you said, but i have never heard anything bad about them at all
